In most cases they are looking for validation of their own beliefs, thinking if another will follow they must be right.

You actually asked 5 questions. My opinion.
1. Because of love, they believe what they are doing is the right thing to do
2. Possibly, depending on the religious beliefs of the other religion,
3. Yes, most all think theirs is the one true religion
4. Most do, though not all, Muslims use violence, Christians are so divided we could right a book on their techniques,
5. I think religion is the direct cause of more pain and anguish than any other source of trouble throughout time.
And I say all this as a believer in Jesus and the Bible as the supreme authority.
If only we Christians would live what this mighty book teaches.

Without going into detail, I believe they believe they are continuing the preaching work of Jesus. In the bible Jesus says "to go on preaching the Good News of the Kingdom". They do from their hearts out of the love they have for Jesus and God.
Think about it this way, if you felt strongly about something that was very important that could help a person(s) would you not try to share it. I know you would not be knocking on strangers doors but you get the idea?

I don't think it's right to do this--however I think everyone has the rite to know about their Creator or simply listen to what the other person has to say. I know that talking about your religion to another person who doesn't believe may sound like a total "politically correct" issue, but to answer your question: trying to convert passerbys = Wrong. Sharing a word or two = Okay.

Given that said person truly believes in his religion and that it is the way to living out the true nature of humanity, that is, the practices of the faith are best for the spiritual health of all people, then the reason is concern and love.
For example, Christianity believes man was created to be in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, it is best for each and every person if he/she is restored to that state of being God-like. The process one must go though to get back to that might be difficult, but the result at the end is more than worth the effort. Therefore, Christians evangelize.

Some people believe that while other religions exist ONLY theirs is the "right" one. I think it's disrespectful to other religions, but these folks believe that it is their mission to "witness" to others. I generally tune them out. I know what I believe and that's the most important thing to me.

I know. But you know what they know this too. They know other religions don't try to convert you. I get so frustrated, they are every where. One time this lady met me in a bus. Without saying hi or hello, she said ," Do you believe in Jesus." I was like ," sure." She said ,"No but do go to Church and follow his teachings." I was like ," No I am not a Christian, but I respect what you believe in." Then that lady just went on lecturing me. I went off on her. I told her ,"what do you know about my religion? How is it different from yours? Have you applied all the teachings of Bible to your life?" Has your life improved completely?" she gave me this dumb look and said ," Jesus is the only one." It's like brainwashed morons running around. They don't want to learn other things. They just want to repeat what they were taught all their life from priests and their parents. It's like they don't have brain of their own.

They usually find a verse or two in their book that tells them to. It makes them feel important like they have a purpose.

If all religions did the same thing, it would be a shrill, noisy, disrespectful world (oh, wait...)
