I think you'll find this website very helpful. Easy to read but in-depth enough to fully answer your question. http://www.inch-aweigh.com/water.html
Also I disagree with what someone said, that you shouldn't drink if you aren't thirsty. That's false. You should be drinking water all the time. When you're thirsty, it means you're dehydrated.

Don't drink it if you're not thirsty.
If you get a bit hungry however and drink water instead, it can fill your stomach and make you feel full when it has zero calories.
Water also helps your body flush out toxins in the blood.
Here are some good ideas:
Losing weight:
1. Do something that gets your heart rate up a bit like, walking, running, biking, and swimming.
2. Eat Whole, Organic foods like: Broccoli, Cabbage, Organic Brown Rice, Spinach, Sweet Potato, Apples, and other fruits and vegetables in their Natural State.
3. Avoid eating corn, white bread, white rice, candy, sodas, chips, and anything else that you already know you shouldn’t be eating.
4. Drink clean water as your beverage of choice. Avoid Fruit drinks and fruit juices (unless YOU juice them yourself)
5. Stop smoking, drinking beer & wine, and drinking coffee.
6. Get 8 hours of sleep each night.
7. Hang out with people who want to be healthy.
Tone up the muscles:
1. Join a gym and get a trainer.
2. If you’re short on cash, start a light stretching & yoga regimen.
3. Do push-ups, and light dumbbell curls for the upper body.
4. As I said above, walk, run, swim, and or bike.
5. Take an aerobics class, a yoga class, or some other fitness class.
6. Join the local YMCA..
Mental Health:
1. Get a friend to talk to each day about your feelings.
2. If you have some money or insurance, get a counselor to talk to.
3. Learn how to meditate.
4. Join a support group for the issue you’re dealing with.
5. Ask your Higher Self (or God) for guidance.
6. Start keeping a diary or journal about your feelings & thoughts.
7. Write a ‘gratitude’ list every night.

I too find it hard to drink a lot of water but I just started Bob Greens diet (fyi its great) and I need to drink a bunch of water every day. There is no reason you cant put in some type of flavor (i use crystal light on the go packs) to ake it better. It might also help to get a cute nalegen bottle to always have with you.

Weight Loss Facts:
Low Fat Foods DON'T WORK.
You cannot lose weight using Low Fat Diets. Low fat foods have been popular for more than 15 years, but yet our society is getting more overweight as each year passes. This fact alone should tell you that eating a purely low fat menu is not the answer to losing weight.
Low Calorie Diets DON'T WORK.
You won't lose weight using a Low Calorie Dieting Plan either. In fact, eating low calories is the worst thing that you can do to your body, since that will only slow down your body's fat burning engine and ruin all chances of losing weight (low calorie diets may allow a few pounds of weight loss for the first few days, but then after that all weight loss comes to a halt --- known as a dieting plateau). You can never get slim by starving yourself.
Low Carb Plans DON'T WORK.
You'll probably find it extremely difficult to get slim using a Low Carb Dieting Plan. Low carb diets have recently become popular over the last couple years, but the problem with low carb menus is that they are too strict and TOO HARD TO FOLLOW for average people. Low carb menus tend to rob your body of too much energy (carbohydrates) and make it nearly impossible to remain on the program for very long. This is why so many dieters find it difficult to follow a strict low carbohydrate menu.
What about Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig Dieting Plans?
Weight loss programs such as Weight Watchers (and Jenny Craig) usually involve slower dieting progress over a longer period of time, since such programs generally promise only 2-3 pounds of weight loss per week. Also, programs such as Jenny Craig usually involve buying special meals and/or dietary supplements during the initial phases of the program. While some people may like these types of dietary programs, we prefer a dieting plan which focuses on faster weight loss, such as the Accelerated Fat Burning Program shown below...

Yes! Everytime I get hungry I drink a cup of water first. Sometimes bodies confuse hunger with dehydration! I lost weight not entirely by this but it helps! I wouldnt ever drink more than 8 cups unless I'm a very serious athlete.

Well, beyond promoting general health, water replaces other things you could be drinking that are worse for you like soft drinks. Also if you are drinking a lot of water there is just not as much room in your stomach for food, and you can eat less without being hungry.

Forget the theory that water helps "fill you up". Thats bunk. But water does help with the body's metabolism, and when you lose weight it puts a bit of a strain on the liver, where some the by-products of fat burning end up. Water helps flush this away so it doesn't build up in the liver.

It helps you to feel full and flushes out toxins. Try adding Crystal Light to your water. Some of it is too sweet for my tastes, but others I can drink with no problem. Or just add a few drops of lemon or lime to the water.

The theory is that drinking water will make you less hungry because your stomach is full of water. Even if that works it would not last for long and you would be hungry again. A good diet works best.

Water works as a system purifier, it flushes the body of unecessary "poisons" so to speak. It is also a hydrator. Some (not all) weight is caused by water retention due to dehydration. A womans inner body is 75% water and needs plenty of it to function appropriately.
