No You should be given a Part 10 new keeper supplement from the previous owners V5C which can be used to tax it at a post office as long as you have MOT and insurance certificate specifically mentioning vehicle. Without paying the tax you cannot legally drive it or keep it on a road or public place - you cannot even tow it with any wheels on the ground. Suggest you make alternative arrangements as if caught, very likely now with Police ANPR cars, the car will be taken off you and you will have to pay a fine, the tax and towing and storage charges (£450 ish total) before they give you the car back. of course you cannot park it outside the house on the road even.
