I thought I didn't need antibiotics for removing stitches after an upper frenectomy, but there was some bleeding because a stitch got stuck and the doc had to dig a little. Now I'm worried. I'm a high risk patient. It's been an hour since the removal of stitches (no novicaine shot). Should I take 2 grams of amoxicillin now (1 hour after some gum bleeding while removing stiches) just in case?

The American Heart Association has relaxed the need for antibiotics for oral procedure (June 2007 publication). They only recommend antiobiotics in a few cases. After reviewing decades worth of data, they concluded that the antiotics are probably not helping so much, yet they are increasing bacterial resistance. You'll probably be fine. checkout the AHA website for symptoms of BE if you're worried

It's usually a good idea to take precautions against bacteria getting into a mouth wound. This is a MAJOR reason why tongue studs like rocker girl on American Idol are so risky.
The head is top three for perfusion or blood supply. Mouth wounds are especially vulnerable because the mouth is such a haven for bacteria, more so than other moist areas.

let me see if i am understanding correctly. you were prescribed antibiotics and didnt think you needed them? if you are a high risk pt you need to call your dr and inform him and let him decide the dose. bacterial endocarditis is not something to play with, better safe than sorry or dead
