I want a camera that I (or someone else) can use to take photos of myself.

Are you looking for a manual camera for a photography class? If so, check Ebay or local camera stores for a Nikon FM10, FM2 or a Pentax K1000. You might also try craigslist.com since people sell used cameras there, too.

Basic zoom lenses aren't too expensive- you might be able to purchase a kit with the camera body, zoom lens and camera bag.

Look on ebay for a Minolta X-700. It has a self-timer so you can get in the picture too. It also has a "P" (Program Mode) that allows the camera to set the aperture (f-stop) and shutter speed. All you have to do is focus. It also has "A" (Aperture Preferred Mode) so you can choose an f-stop and let the camera choose a shutter speed. Plus you can choose to shoot in Manual Mode and set aperture and shutter speed yourself. The X-700 also has Off-Film Flash Metering (aka TTL and used today on most all DSLR cameras and some digicam models). With a dedicated flash such as the Minolta 360PX or 280PX you have more control over the f-stop you select. There are also dedicated flash units from Vivitar and other after-market companies.

There are too many zoom lenses for it to count. My personal favorites are the Minolta 35-70mm f3.5 zoom and the Minolta 70-210 f4 zoom. These zooms have what is known as a "constant aperture" - the aperture is the same over the entire zoom range.

There are also innumerable fixed-focal length lenses for the Minolta cameras. You can find lenses from 16mm (full-frame fisheye) to 800mm mirror lenses.

The Pentax K1000 is an excellent camera and has a wide assortment of lenses available. Since it is all manual - you set everything - its a good camera to learn with. The Minolta SRT-202 is comparable. If I were teaching a photography class those are the ones I'd suggest for my students.

Check ebay. You can find quite a few Pentax K 1000's there, just see what lens they'll sell with it. The Pentax is a good beginning camera to learn with.
