I just finished "The Handmaids Tale" by Margaret Atwood.

This is a book about a society taken over by religious nut jobs. Sex outside of marriage is a hanging offense unless a man of power is assigned a handmaid. Her only purpose is procreation.

Once a month they have intercourse with the handmaid laying back on the wife, and the wife holding her hands, the theory being the 3 become one. No touching other than necessary and very clinical. It is called "The Ceremony".

I can see Pat Robertson endorsing outlawing sex. Can't you?

I think society should be built on freedom and that government has a right to interfere with freedom only on a VERY limited basis for what the people deem to be the greater good. Otherwise we'll have "1982's" and "The Handmaids Tales" before very long. With all the wire tapping that's going on now, we're getting pretty close already! SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH... They'll hear you.

And, yes, people like Roberston want to legislate morality, which is a very scary propostion. What if crazy people get in power and legislate their morality. Ugh! I say freedom at the base of all legislation!

John B, a kick a** fat chic wouldn't bother gracing you with her beauty. So, you need not worry. It is definitely your loss.

Now that I've dealt with the troll, I'd like to see someone try to make premarital sex illegal. Could you imagine how many laws we would have to change to allow the police to bust into a house, stop two consenting adults from engaging in intercourse, then dragging them both out the car, and arresting them?

Do you know how nasty the backseat of a squad car would get? Bleh.

And don't be fooled. Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell were getting it on every Sunday morning.

That would put the Vile Temptresses out of business.

I read that book back when it first was published. I got my ever so Christian mother to read it afterward and all she could say about it was she tought it was "pretty far fetched" Since then the fundies have been doing everything they can to try and create the type of theocracy the book warns against. So yes, Pat Robertson would probably endorse such a law.

That was an awesome movie. Natasha Richardson and Robert Duvall were in it.

As far as the question is concerned...I don't see why any of the religious right would have a problem making premarital sex illegal. However, only a slim majority seem to practice what they preach.

Personally....with my moral code the way it is...I don't see what the big deal is about premarital sex....we all need to practice, right?????

Even though I am not for premarital sex, I would not want to see it be illegal.

That takes it to an extreme. God in all of the major religions says that the practice should not be, but allows it to go on. People must have a choice of what to do or not do. That would make you a robot, which is not what God is about, contrary to what some may think here.

Funny though, that people dont want to legislate morality, but want to legislate it out.

While this would clear up some problems (STDs, abortions, etc.), it would be nearly impossible to regulate. I have nothing against sex as long as it is kept to marriage. However, even as a Christian, I see this as an impossible proposition. Unless you plan to check every person for evidence of sexual activity every day, you can't enforce it. So, no, I would not make it illegal. If enforcement is impossible, then it's not worth making illegal.

I wouldn't outlaw it. People need a choice on how to live their lives. Controlling every aspect of people's lives isn't a good thing. It could really backfire! Sure, it would be nice to have a society where sex is seem as something sacred and not just for pleasure, but we aren't living in that society. But boy, would it be good to not have to worry about my girls when they get to be teenagers!!

wierdos.
how would you know?! would both be punished then? and then what would happen if the woman became pregnant...because then abortion would be illegal too.
thank goodness it's just a book.
i do, however, believe that women should be on the pill if they are being promiscuous. i guess it shouldn't be forced, but hey! what ever happened to responisibility, eh? it would mean a whole heck of a lot less abortions. it's a lot easier than assuming that the men would just remember the condom. hmmmm..just a thought.

Nope, because it would lead to ridiculous stuff like you described from this book...the mind sudders to think of the ways people could pervert "loopholes" in such a law.
