This first one which pops into my head was the NBA championship in 1996. Michael Jordan's father had been murdered. After Jordan came out of retirement the Bulls won the championship on Father's Day. Jordan cradled the trophy and cried like a baby. Anyone not moved by that scene is heartless.

I've never understood how otherwise rational seeming human beings can get so worked up over who wins a game they aren't even playing.

At least with Star Trek or something, there's some dramatic tension and an overall story to be told. Sure, Trekkies are weird, but at least their object of obsession has themes and plots.

Yet, for some reason, being a sports fanatic is socially acceptable, even encouraged. If someone came to work in their Starfleet uniform when a new movie came out, they'd be sent home, but wearing a jersey when 'your' team in the play-offs is A-OK.

It's just so crazy, bizarro, strange.

Back in the old days, before I understood things better as a Buddhist, the Steelers moved me to tears frequently, because of stupid plays or finally making to the Super Bowl for the 5th ring after the dismal '81 defeat which also made me weep and gnash my teeth.

I don't remember crying, but I was pretty upset when Australia lost to Italy in the World Cup last year. I mean, I know they're a better team and all, and I wouldn't have expected us to win. But to lose because of a ridiculous penalty decision during stoppage time isn't really the ending you hope for.

When my brothers played football in high school. Especially when my younger brother was a senior, I drove two hours every Friday night to support him and the team was great. When they lost by a field goal in a playoff game, and he knew he would never play competitively again, it was a real heartbreaker.

I live in Orange County, CA. When the Angels finally won the world series, I burst into tears I was so happy for them. They were almost out of it all together, but came back at the last minute. They had years upon years of getting close and failing, getting close and failing. I was really happy for them.

Sometimes watching cricket makes me cry. Man, is that sport boring!
I'll admit sometimes I'll get a bit choked up in a movie when the underdog finally breaks through with 1 second on the clock.
