Okay...
# 1. soldiers ARE volunteering to deploy with other battalions/units
# 2. This question was asked b/c I personally have a few battlebuddies that are going to Iraq b/c they VOLUNTEERED to go & their main reason was to "make $" , "Get experience", & even "make $ to be able to get away from my wife/husband/gf/bf" when they return.
# 3. Never did I say I was against the military.
& if you were offended by this question, I appologize but lighten up... I thought "there are no stupid questions".
Isn't that what this site is for? To ask questions...
**It was just a question!!!**

People.
I know first hand what SM'S go through. I am in the military myself.
Jeez people. I know about this stuff.
For all of you that saw it fit to be irate & disrespectful; you are the reason people are so quick to be judgmental towards military personnel.
My question was a simple one & you blew it out of proportion.
Instead of telling me to sit down & shut up you should have asked in a civil way what the question was about instead of just blowing off steam.
& I'm almost certain that everyone of you that had something smart to say must be Active Duty.
National Guard & Reserves are a branch of the Army too.

that seems like an ignorant question. It's not like soldiers, sailors, and Marines volunteer for deployment. In most cases, they're ordered to go, and refusing orders is pretty much against the law in the military.

It isn't like being deployed is a walk in the park, or like they'll be evading any problems.

EDIT:
It sounds like many of the reasons you listed are simply to get the means necessary to solve their problems, not evade them. Also, some men would volunteer for a tour overseas because it breaks the monotony of training. Imagine a football team that always practices and never gets to play a game.

They dont use it to get away from thier problems, they use the deployment to solve thier problems at times. This country as a whole is in debt. The military is no exception. Financial problems lead to marital problems as well. So deploying and getting away helps solve some of this. Also, for some people absence makes the heart grow fonder.

I have know wives that will sometimes say the same thing more or less.... "You have been here too long, isnt it time for you to deploy again?"

Also, I'm sure you know this, soldiers feel a sense of duty. When you brothers and sisters are someplace fighting, you want to be with them. Selfless Service.

Some probably do-The problem is that your question makes it sounds like most or all are doing it. I think it is a small percentage who do it for that reason. Some will volunteer to deploy to go with units/personnel they have served with, others for the tax free status meaning more money which they may need, some have not been yet and they want to pull their weight and prove they can handle it. I would think the most common reason for going back would be to be with the unit and friends that are there now-when your friends or people you trained are in danger then you want to be with them to help; for a first time deployment is to prove yourself up to the challenge.
Most people I think just disliked the sound of the question which makes it sound like this is why most are doing it. Like I said some probably are but not that high of a percentage.

I know what you mean and I really do not know what to say.My husband is deployed right now ,and I know that some of the guys who went with him volunteered to go.A few even asked to be extended.I do not know or understand why they would do that, but I guess it is to get there self in a better place finicaly when they come back.Think about the extra money you bring in while over there.

If you are soldier and there is a war, then you are invited.
If you plan to stay in the Army or any other service the fact that you did not see combat will detract from your resume. In many cases you won't get promoted unless you have gone to Iraq or Afghanistan.

SOOO, if your being in the military is about your convenience, then you have a point. If it is about being a soldier then you are wrong.

Different reasons...some do it for money. The pay increase isn't much, but to some it is worth it, especially if you can get a bonus for reenlisting over there...it would be tax free. Some do it for their careers, they want the military to be a career and they want to rise in the ranks so having more deployment experience helps. Some do it because it is easier to leave because Uncle Sam "needs" you to than because you want to file for divorce. That isn't rational, but people are human.

Seriously, you'll have to ask the soldiers who you know why they volunteered. And if they say to get away from problems on the home front then ask them for more details. Personally, I don't know of anyone who has volunteered to go to Iraq or Afghanistan for that reason.

I am sure there are Soilders, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen that deploy for the wrong reasons. However 130 degree weather, no fresh water, sands storms, camel spiders the size of small cats that eat the flesh off your bones and sleeping just miles away from people who hate you and are trying to kill you is not anyones idea of "getting away".

PROUD ARMY WIFE:-) AS THEY HAVE STATED EARLIER IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN DEPLOYED IT DOES CHANGE YOU . IT CAN GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES AND THEN MAKE YOU SMILE. BEING DEPLOYED MESSES WITH YOUR EMOTIONS AND IT DOES NOT MATTER WHERE YOUR ARE DEPLOYED TOO. THERE IS ALL CRAP GOING ABOUT HOW WE ARE IN IRAQ JUST TO KILL. WHAT ABOUT THE GOOD TOO. WHERE A TOWN HAS NEVER SEEN FRESH WATER BEFORE THEN WE BRING THEM IN FRESH WATER AND SHOW THEM HOW TO KEEP IT GOING. KIDS WHO HAVE NEVER SEEN A SCHOOL BEFORE WE BUILD IT AND TEACH AND PLAY THERE ON OUR TIME OFF. IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN IN THE MILITARY BEFORE OR HAVE KNOWN ANYONE WHO HAS . JUST LISTEN TO MANY DIFFERENT STORIES AND IT COULD GIVE YOU PROBLEMS THAT COME FIRST. AND THOSE IN THE MILITARY WHO ARE LIFERS THERE IS A REASON FOR IT.

SHUT UP ST DOWN AND LISTEN THEN YOU WILL LEARN SOMETHING.

I asked to go to iraq

a) to get away from my nagging kids.

b) because the lativan army has deployed 135 lativans as part of the coalilition of the willing. (lativan men are the most geougous in the world).

c) because I get danger money twice what I would be earning in australia and I wanted to have a nice big house to bring my lativan home too.

why wouldn't you deploy to get away from financial problems? sometime the beneifits outway the danger.
