dont keep food out for too long, that was my mistake.
things you'll need:
One sheet of paper
One glass or clear plastic cup
Scotch tape/adhesive tape
Cider vinegar, or other liquid bait
Make a funnel trap:
Make a cone out of the sheet of paper (like a funnel). Tape the outside of the cone so that it stays in place.
Check that the cone fits snugly into a glass or cup.
Cut off the tip of the cone so that you now have a funnel.
Pour a small amount of cider vinegar into the glass or cup. (Rum mixed with orange juice also works very well - additionally, a half teaspoon of baker's yeast in water can also suffice)
Insert the funnel into the glass or cup, but don't let the bottom of the funnel touch the liquid. Tape the funnel in two or three places from the outside so that there is no gap between the glass and the cone.
Place your newly created trap on a flat surface. The flies will be attracted by the smell of the fruity vinegar and fly into the cone. The flies will slip down the cone and will either land in the vinegar and drown or will be trapped and not able to get back out. If you leave the trap overnight, the trapped fruit flies will eventually fall into the vinegar and drown.

Take a small jar and punch holes in the lid - then 1/4 fill it equal parts cider vinegar and water - place near the fruit basket or wherever they seem to be in highest concentration. If there is a large infestation you could use a bowl with soap bubbles and place a light near by to make the bubbles sparkle - they will dive toward it and drown in about 1 hr. then you can use the vinegar traps to keep them at bay. Good Luck!

I found that if you cut a plastic bottle about a quarter way from the top and insert it upside down into the rest of the bottle (to make a funnel), then put some tomatoes or other fruit fly favourite into the bottle they go inside but cannot come out again. At least it stops most of them buzzing around your fruit salad!

Good suggestions here. What I want to know is this: How does a fruit fly appear out of no where and develop from a piece of fruit.
Are they micro-organisms inside the skin of fruit. I hate those little beasts!

When I was younger I kept an orange in my locker and forgot to take it out. One day I was opening my locker and fruit flys came flying out. The only way really to get them to disappear is to remove the fruit. Its amazing how they all of a sudden they disappear. Most fruit flys appear when fruit starts to rot so I suggest eating the fruit before it gets to that point
Hope this helps.

Mix up some vinegar and dish soap (just a little of both) and water it down. They will be attracted to it and they should die in it. Only use it when doors and windows are closed or else you will attract more.
