I listened to my teenage daughter, who is very smart and aware, try to discuss politics with two friends. Her friends were not aware of who Dick Cheney is... they both acted terrified Hillary was going to turn us into a soviet nation, and when I checked, neither one of them knew which had come first, the civil or the revolutionary war.

It started me off on a very cynical jag which you can experience by checking my questions here at Q&A.

Given how uninformed so many young Americans seem to be, I have to wonder how ideal citizens can be created by a culture of self-gratification and constant entertainment distraction.

This question is asked by every current generation of the next generation. And guess what: We are all still here living a good life, in most instances. So yes and no. I would be more concerned if the students of today will be the responsible adults of tomorrow.

if you mean the children of today, such as the ones who are in day care(pre-school), who complete government approved arts and crafts, go to the bathroom at scheduled times, sit down at the table at eat their appropriatly prepared lunches, then return to complete another approved craft, activity, sing-along, then bathroom break, then snack, without one independant thought entering their little sponge-like brains! Yea they are going to be great little office drones and ideal citizens. My children, who are raised by their mother and have the freedom to test boundaries, explore, think, make mistakes, and learn things on their own are going to be their bosses and leaders. BTW I work full-time, but also am a huge part of their life

Maybe I will, I don't know. Unfortunately, schools don't really teach politics anymore, and I know that some of my classmates will end up working as bathroom attendents. Kids don't apply themselves anymore, and I am the exception as are like 10 of 50 kids in my grade.

Yes, most will be. None of us are perfect, so it is something we struggle with.
