Do you ask the same question of British people? Because there are plenty of photos of their former king shaking hands with Hitler, too, and he even actively promoted Hitlers agenda in Europe.

The fact of the matter is, Hitler talked a good talk at first. That's why he was elected and welcomed by other European leaders after WWI. He was supposed to help Germany rebuild.

When he turned psycho, it took a long time for EVERYBODY to do something about it, including the USA. Do do YOU feel proud of YOUR American heritage because YOUR leaders ignored (or didn't know about) the immense suffering that Hitler caused?

For the record, I'm not proud of EVERYTHING that every Catholic has ever done, because Catholics are (a) sinners and (b) not perfect, just like everybody else. But I am proud of the heritage of Catholic teaching, because THAT is sound. Catholic teaching doesn't promote the extermination of Jews or mentally ill people or anything else like it. I put my faith in Christ and His Church, not people.

Yes we are proud. And the picture of Hitler shaking hands with a bishop doesn't mean nothing, the Catholic Church never approved of Hitler.

"...Only the Catholic Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler's campaign for suppressing the truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom. I am forced thus to confess that what I once despised, I now praise unreservedly." - Albert Einstein, quoted in Time Magazine (1940)

Yes mostly!

We accept the teachings of Jesus, and try to live his perfect example of Love, Peace and Forgiveness.

Now, there have been trillions of Catholics over the last 2000 years, am I proud of 100% of the actions by 100% of them?

No, I am not even 100% proud of my own actions.

Can you say that you are 100% proud of your own heritage? Do you know ALL of the actions of ALL of your ancestors? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Peace be with you!

I’m very proud of my heritage. It is something that I intend to pass on to my kids. For me one of the best parts of being Catholic is getting together sharing with the community in general, having faith in everything I do and praying for all the good things in life.
That's why I'm a very happy person.

Yes, I did see the link, and I can tell you, that picture can not change my faith. This is not a matter of heritage, people, bishops, etc. This is a matter of faith. My faith in God and Jesus was transmitted through the Catholic church and I feel myself blessed for that. The history of salvation is personal and the only one who can judge our actions is God, so we can not judge that bishop for shaking hands with that sinner; only God would judge him in His time. In fact Jesus did it too, he talked with sinners and people gossiped about that. So, I think it´s better to avoid that kind of scandals, unless that we are free of sins.

Heritage? I have joy at being in the Church that Christ founded, the family of God.

Of course.

But, I'm not too pious.. to not backslap that dopey hat off your empty head... with such force, as to knock the goatee clear off your chin.
