I believe he briefed the President and Vice President for over 2 hours about why invading Iraq is not a good idea. They were going to go ahead with it anyway and I think only those 3 men know why he resigned, but he knew they were up to no good. Gen Powell refused to operate under the lies and secrecy of the administration.

His wife has a medical condition which requires regular monitoring. He had already given much of his married life to service in his country.
