I have worked with hospice several times as both a part of my job as an assisted living director and on a personal level.
I agree that they are most definitely angels of mercy and compassion. They are a gift from god to families of those persons who are terminally ill. I hope that if ever I am in need of those services my family will have the forethought-if I am unable to make decisions to have hospice services for me. I have never heard of a "bad hospice experience".

You say, the family is told their family member is in pain"even if they don't think he is"....this seems to be your main problem. The answer is that what you think about it, is not the main issue - its what the patient and the doctors feel is appropriate. By the time a person goes into hospice care, they have a very limited amount of time left. The doctors and nurses are committed to making this limited time as comfortable and pain-free as possible. There is no idea of "wait until he has pain, then give him something" - the concept is to make sure he never has ANY pain. And frankly, to be blunt about it, nobody is going to ask the family if they think he is in pain - its not their judgement call. The doctors in hospices don't just "give morphine and keep increasing it until he just dies" - its not a death chamber. The Morphine doesn't kill the person - the death is going to happen anyway. The morphine just helps the person die in comfort, instead of waiting for other people to decide they need some pain relief. I realise that you have probably just gone through an experience of losing someone - I'm sorry if this is so. But throwing blame at hospice staff, who are the most selfless and caring people you could meet - is not going to help.

Yes. My mother had bone cancer several years ago, and hospice was there to help. They took care of everything for us, and were comforting. We put Mother back at home from the hospital, and they took care of everything when she passed away.
Hospice is a very compassionate group.

I'm so sorry for your lose. There are many Hospice nurse's that go beyond their call of duty. Sounds like you had the perfect nurses to care for your father and give you peace of mind. It's people like you that make it worth it to continue in this medical field.

You bring a tear to my eye. Yes they are a wonderful group of people. They helped take care of my mother-in-law during her final days.
She did not want to stay in the care facility and wanted to be home. They came in the early morning hours to be with us when she passed.
