He has no problems falling asleep - but is very restless when asleep grabs hold of things, talks and can be quite aggressive but cannot be woken up.

He needs to have a sleep study. It could be related to his inability to enter or remain in certain stages of sleep. Based on the sleep study results...he may be able to get help from his medical doctor or he may want to consider seeking therapy to see if this is somehow mental health related.

This is usually a sign of a troubled youth or issue that has not been resolved.

I used to sleep walk when I was very stressed, a friend of mine was startled when I was on a stop over with him, I woke him up with an almighty crash in the kitchen as he then saw me climbing out of the kitchen window, apparently I had got both my legs out and was about to drop out of his window.

Good job I didn't as I was on the 8th floor of a tower block.

So your friend should first seek a doctors help and get a referral to hospital or a sleep centre to monitor your friends behaviour.

My issues were resolved and it was my smother who was the reason for my problems in the first place.

A lot more common than you think there was a series of programmes on BB1 a couple of months ago and lots of people with simular problems.
hey were assessed at a proper sleep clinic and camera's put in their home so that it could be recorded.
many of the partners could not sleep with them they gave them therapy and it worked in a lot of cases or at least made it a lot better.
Your friend needs to go and see their doctor about this and they will refer him some where to help. The suffer with sleep depravity and can be damaging to health and well being waking up tired ect.

You tried to wake him up!?!?! that is the worse ting to do! he if most likely having a bad dream which keeps recurring and is trying to wake himself up. It could also be that he has a severe case of sleep apnoea which means your airways relax too much when your asleep and you choke and his may be his way of trying to wake up. But if someones sleepwalking, talking etc do not NOT NOT wake them up or talk to them just gently lead them back to bed otherwise you could make their problem recurring! I suggest your friend seeks medical advice asap fora GP diagnosis. If not then try and relax him before bed or talk about his past etc see if something bad happened and he goes through it in his sleep? talk about his fears and "stuff" hop i helped. Good Luck Zzz Bye xxx

I was married to a man who did the same things.
In his "sleep" he believed me to be someone else.
He saw himself as a soldier, and me as the enemy.
There was no warning in the night.
It was terrifying for both of us in that moment.

What I did in the situation, was to "play along with him", as if
the situation were real, talking him down, calming him
by making a truse between the two of us that neither one
would harm the other, that we were both tired, and needed sleep. I would see to it that he would get back to his snoring
before I closed my eyes (If I ever did the rest of the night)
In the morning he had no memory of any of it,
infact would be offended if I was emotionally distant.

Advice.
Do not sleep in the same room. - Or in the same house.
See that he is seen by a psychiatrist or psychologist - do
take written documentation with you of when, how often,
quotes, and his actions. From there they can recommend
testing or therapy. Do let them know this guy is DANGEROUS and UNPREDICTABLE !

As nice as he may be awake.
Do not trust him when he sleeps.

I have a similar problem. I like to strangle people while THEY sleep. I find it works much better that way, and if your quick, they don't put up much of a fight.

Interesting. Used to know someone who would beat you up if you put a hand on him to wake him up (he warned us before we stayed at a hostel) We shouted to wake him up and sure enough he got up puchning, couldn't help it.

What could work on that? Hypnosis?
