Up until recently, I was not intimidated by others - always spoke my mind in any situation. This rarely led to confrontation, as my size and "presence" (as I've been told many times) discouraged that. As I get older, I'm finding it less desirable to be so bold, BUT - I still FEEL anger and/or frustration when in certain situations! How should I handle this? I will be posting several questions about different situations - HELP! - PLEASE, I really need to hear your knowledgeble suggestions!

WHAT SHOULD I DO IN THIS SITUATION:

At a crowded small park with several young kids. Guy and gal (both about 25 years old) enter park, and immediately release their large very hyper dog - - LEASH LAW (law, not rule) clearly posted nearby - NO dog is allowed in park unless leashed. I feel angry, uncomfortable for the kids safety, disrespected, and embarrassed as a law abiding adult seeing other adults directly breaking the law in front of my kids.

Go over to them and politely say "excuse me, but are you aware that there is a leash law here?" Also, you should research if there are any "dog-friendly" parks in the area so you can suggest (again, politely) they take their dog there.

If they are ignorant of the law, that may be enough. If they are ignoring the law, you now know it--call the police.

Try talking to the couple to let them know their dog needs to be on a leash at all times. Stress the importance that there are young children around who could be seriously hurt if they are approached by the dog. This may work but unfortunately it sounds like these people may not have children of their own, so they may not really care. If this does not work, hopefully it will, but if not just alert an officer that may be around especially if you see the dog going after the children.

I would encourage you to speak out on that one. Concern for the kids' safety is real and something all but the biggest of jerks can understand. The leash law is a backup to your reasonable feelings on this one in my opinion.

Tell them they need to leash their dog as per the leash law (point it out, if necessary).
If this doesn't work, contact the police.

Ask them to leash the dog. If they do not comply, call the police non- emergency number and ask for an officer to come down, because you fear for the children's safety.

I can't understand your hesitation in this case. Is it that you are afraid you will lose your temper and yell at them or threaten them or worse (maybe that is what you used to do in your younger days)? They need to be spoken to about it, or they will assume that no one minds. Do it calmly, and if they verbally disrespect you, just call the police (discreetly of course, not right in front of them). You are a grown-up now.

Explain your petition to them. Do it respectfully and not as some chastizing, crazy old man. Either they will they repect your feelings, and leash their animal or they will tell you to kick rocks.

If you get the prior, good. If you get the later, explain to them that you will notify animal control.

I believe you will get ther results you want.
