I am leaving my church by choice (I'm not moving or anything, I just don't want to attend anymore), and as tradition holds there is a leaving ceremony. I have to pick a song to sing... it has to be religious, and about leaving and moving on. Any ideas?

It can't be about how great God is, just about moving onto the next chapter of my life

My church has always been much more a social gathering with some religion that a religious gathering with some socialization... which has made all these 'traditions'. You aren't required to but everyone is offered the choice, but I can't just leave because it would hurt my mum so much more.

*Is Catholic*

It sounds as if your Catholic parish has issues about being Catholic to me.

I hope that you will not take this parish as normative and that you will seek out a true and proper parish where there is devout worship of Christ and true devotion to the blessed sacrament.

As such, I am going to suggest a song in Latin for you to sing as you leave.

I think you are concentrating on the wrong problem here. Instead of trying to think of a song to sing, why not try to figure out the underlying reason you want to leave the Church? If you are attending the Catholic Church and don't like it, I suggest looking into "rediscovering" your faith. Remember, as a Catholic, you have the fullness of faith as given by God. Visit with your Priest and tell him how you feel. You may also see if you can sit in on the RCIA program at your parish. If you leave, you will leave a very good thing behind and your life will have an empty spot. Good luck in your faith journey and don't forget that whatever you do God loves you and will always welcome you back!

Limewire has plenty of songs you can download and listen to. Although it's quite common, I still love Pachelbel's Canon in D for the entrance or exit. I also love Chopin's Etude in E Opus 10 No. 3, although it is a piano piece and I don't know how it will sound in an organ. Check with your parish or a wedding consultant for the choice and number of songs, and if that organist is too lazy to advise you (maybe due to very limited repertoire?) kindly find someone else who can. After all, you will be paying for the services so you have all the right to be advised and to choose your songs.

The one that springs to mind most readily is unfortunately the hardest to find. It's called "There Is Life Within The River" by Marty Haugen on the album "The Song of Mark." You're best bet is probably the library. It's all about passing on to another stage of life.

Alternatively, you might try "Be Not Afraid" or "My New Life Has Begun" (by Ralph Funaro). It's kind of hard because most Christian 'going away' songs have a funereal quality to them.

Dear, there is no tradition within the Church for leaving it, ceremonially or not. You can certainly make up one of your own, complete with song if you'd like. But to leave the Church, you simply ... leave. And the door remains open to you, should you ever decide to return home.

I am Catholic and have never heard of a leaving ceremony. That's ridiculous.

If you are having a leaving ceremony you are definitely not Catholic...you are some other denomination.

What is this, a coven? The Citadel? You don't have to sing a song when you leave. Just walk out and don't return.
