You were correct. I too am a German American and I was in the Marines. You are right, your friend must be an American citizen before he can join. He might want to go talk to the Marine recruiters just to be sure but I'm afraid they are going to tell him the same thing.

Sorry I am German American but I can't spell what I say. I'm not that great at spelling English either, LOL.

As a military spouse overseas, on AFN (American Forces Network) I constantly see spots (cheesy PSAs AFN has instead of commercials) for foreign military members looking for citizenship. Judging from that, no, your friend does not have to be a US citizen to join our military. However, I do not know any of the requirements he would have to meet in order to join. Have him contact his local Marine recruiting station. (Even if he's in Germany, there are bases there and he should be able to find a phone number.)
And good luck to your friend. The Marines rock!

You don't have to be an American citizen, I served with several fellow Marines that weren't. If he is in Germany, tell him to go to the nearest consulate or the US Embassy, and they will tell him about what he needs to do. If he is in the States, he should go to the nearest recruiter. About the only thing he wouldn't be able to do is intelligence, most of those require citizenship. Almost anything else, he can do.

He only has to be a legal resident alien of the U.S. I once served with a Navy doctor who had been a medic with Hitler's Wehrmacht, fought on the Eastern Front and was given the Order of the Iron Cross for his bravery. In the U.S. he rose in rank and eventually commanded a Navy Hospital prior to his retirement.

I've served with people who where in the Marines to get their citizenship, so I don't think he would have a problem.
