It is a stimulant initially and then it becomes a depressant. You are, in effect, borrowing energy and then later on you feel like a deflated balloon devoid of energy and very tired.

there's a lot of wrong information posted here, any first year med student will know that Alcohol is in fact BOTH A STIMULANT AND A DEPRESSANT
Firstly Alcohol begins raising GLUTAMATE levels = stimulant, then Alcohol begins raising GABA levels = Depressant.
Alcohol is Both a Stimulant and a Depressant, this issue is not negotiable or arguable, it is what it is, and it is BOTH

it is a depressant, which always makes me wonder why people like to get drunk, because it will just bring your senses down, if not knock you out, and it certainly won't help if you want to have a sexual encounter, because you will be depressed, or not fully coherent, although it allows the person to let "down" their inhibitions.
