i want to know natral ways to tan and preserve hides/ pelts but also leave the hair on them

as a kid I found a book on tanning and I remember using 5lbs of alum bought out two drugstores, mixed it in a 5 gal. bucket with water. took a deer hide and removed all the meat off the leather side placed it in the bucket and stirred it two times a day for six weeks keep bucket covered because this gets ripe after a couple of weeks.Pull out the hide and stretch it on a piece of plywood until it is completely dried.then work the leather on the corner of anything to soften it .I did two hides back in the late sixties and they are still in my basement today. Hair still intact look like the day I got them.
