Yes, it's a sin, and you're right - a lot of people have a problem with it, including many Christians.
We should never eat way more than we need to survive. It's not good for the body and it is a kind of selfish greed, esp. when there are others who don't have enough food.
The 10th commandment forbids greed, which is basically the desire to possess any material good without any limits. This principle could be applied to the wanton consumption of food.

Gluttony is a sin because it leads to and early death. According to Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death.
Matt J. The wisdom of this passage is sound. However, I have corrected my error in the statement above. The death it speaks of is not only early mortal death but also death to health, death to relationships, death to self esteem, and anything else that gluttony leads to in the life of a person that kills their joy and contentment. God cares about our life long contentment and joy but He loves us so much and have given us free will. But when we with our free will choose to sin on to death it angers God because He wants so much more for our lives. And still He will not interfere.
