What college are you going to? I will be heading up the Engineers Without Borders chapter at my university next year. I traveled to El Salvador this summer and worked for 2 weeks. We actually have a 3 year agreement with this community to work with them. We have been installing a water purification system for the past year or so, and we make semi-annual trips (1 in the summer, 1 during winter break). You should look to see if your college has an Engineers Without Borders chapter, and if they don't, it's a perfect opportunity to start one! EWB National would be your contact if you need to do this, along with all of the other necessary people you need to start a new group at your school.

Also, Habitat for Humanity does many, many projects abroad. This costs money out of your pocket (whereas grants will pay for EWB trips) but I've met many people who have gone to third world countries for a week to build a house and found it one of the most rewarding experiences they've ever had.

If you want to talk more about this, I would love to give you some more insight. Email me for more info.

Lifewater does a lot of water projects in poor countries and are always looking for skilled volunteers (also train volunteers). If you want to work for a sectarian group they are big in help. See link below.
