My cousin's Laney amp is making a staticy crackling noise constantly, if it is just switched on you can hear the noise and it continues through even when playing. We took apart the control panel and tubes from the main body of the amp but have no idea what we're looking for. Could anyone with some experience let us know what it could be and how or if we could fix it at home?

if it has separate units - which unit is it coming from, amp or preamp. If varying the controls doesn't have an effect (other than volume or tone of the noise) continue. If it does u found it.

if it is a tube set, and pulling a tube does not kill all the tubes, pull one at a time from the input to determine what section the noise is coming from.

If u can't isolate it it may be a power cap. If it is an old set just go ahead and replace all the electrolytics.

I have had a resistor cause this, that gets real tricky to find.

Sounds like that amp is in need of a tune-up. Take it to a service profession to have it checked on. Sometimes the pots get old or something is grounding out causing it to make noise. Have it professionally checked if you arent electronically educated.
