If most of your guests are coming in from out of town then you should start sending out invites about 8 weeks prior to the wedding date - and you'll want RSVPs the week before - for the caterer. If most are in town then 6 weeks is fine.

8-6 weeks is the norm. But if you wedding is in late November, like around Thanksgiving, then maybe even 10 weeks before. People are going to be making plans with their family for the holidays, and sometimes they do things earlier or later than the actual day. It might be a good idea to send them the 2nd or 3rd weekend of September. That way they have plenty of time to work in your wedding day into their holiday plans. You can actually start addressing and putting the invitations together now. It may save you some stress because you can do a few in your spare time rather than setting aside a whole day or weekend do to them!

You could always send out some of those SAVE THE DATE cards now and then send out your invitations about 3 to 4 weeks before the wedding.

Well..... in all honesty you are pushing it. You need to send out something called a "save-the-date" RIGHT NOW. These are sent out about 4-8 months in advance, just saying that you are getting married and that November 12, 2007 (for example) should be "saved" so that the person can attend. Then when you get about a month from the wedding you send out your fancy invites that have directions and all that stuff.

I would send them out no later than mid September with an RSVP for mid October. This would be to give any out of towners a chance to save up for a hotel and the cost of the trip as well as those not financially well off to save up a little bit.
This will also be plenty of time to take time off from work.
It will also give you plenty of time to call up those who have been so rude as to not RSVP to give the final headcount to the caterer.

If you are relying on getting back RSVPs then 8 weeks before, if not then 6 weeks is plenty.
