I want to get the kenwood mp435u, which has a USB on the front, but in order to use it with the ipod connector cable, you have to conect the cable to a pin-port on the back AND the USB on the front, which would look bad and means I couldn't use the USB port (the reason im buying this model).

my question is, can I simply not hook the usb portion of the cable and waive the ability for the tags to show up on the stereo and just manually choose the songs. when i connect the connector to the ipod, will it still charge and link the audio only?

I HATE the way Kenwood designed this model. You're correct, you need to make connections both on the front and the back to listen to iPod.

If you only make the front connection, you will have full iPod control...but no sound. You have to make the rear connection also if you want to hear the iPod.

The rear connection is just a stereo mini jack. You could use a headphone extension cable to relocate the jack someplace that's more convenient to you.
