Hi Joe,
Very good in deed. A good question.
Nearly 30 years of marriage and a son who is 25.
I believe the biggest aspect of any relation should be
TRUST !!!!!
Trust in compasses many areas in any relationship. As adults we value trust of others weather if we are in a intimate or not type of relationship. We go to work, at our jobs, we trust our employers - the people to which we work with, etc. We place trust when we go out to dine, the restaurant, it's staff, The cooks and etc.
We trust our spouses to understand or feelings, our emotions and our anxieties [I think the spelling is correct].
This is probably just a few which others can add too.
Joe - again. A great question. Have a great day & a safe one also.

The most important aspect of a relationship is understanding. By understanding, I not only mean understansing each others feelings but also understanding one anothers thoughts, needs, expressions. It is afterall at the level of intimacy when a relatioship reaches a particular intimacy. Couples at this stage should feel independent rather than posessed. This is the stage when one actually needs some space/privacy to express hie/her feelings and that is what makes a relationship grow.

Hearts need to really connect. And only then, will an intimate relationship cease to be just physical, and only then, will the relationship be based on TRUE LOVE. The best.

Humor - if you can laugh, giggle, snicker, guffaw with your significant other without worrying about hurting their feelings then you've got all the important bases covered - mutual respect, trust and a similar world view.

Compromise.
Because you need it in all aspects of the relationship. Without it - you won't last and you will lose all intimacy. In order to have a sense of intimacy - you need to feel like that person is working with you and for you and you need to know that there is a common goal there. Not saying marriage, but that you both want and care that the other person is just as happy with the way things in general are going as you are. You need to give things up to show you care and you need to take things sometimes to know they care. Compromise effects everything from finances to sex to silly things like watching TV and how you deal with relatives and friends.
Compromise covers loyalty, respect, trust .. all of that... because if you don't respect the person - you won't comprimise with them. If you don't trust them, you won't compromise with them. If you are not loyal to them - you won't compromise with them.
And that's my two cents on that. =)

Sex. A healthy intimate relationship has to have an appropriate physical component to it.

Agreed...respect. Which my ex had none of...as much as she thought she was right. Honesty HAS to accompany that respect too.

There are just THREE things, that I have, EVER looked for, in a relationship!
Those are the TWO SEVEN-letter words, - "RESPECT" and "LOYALTY", - and, - even MORE importantly, a FIVE-letter word, - "TRUST"!
If a couple don't have ALL of these, - in ABUNDANT amounts, - for one another, then, - in MY opinion, anyway, - they SHOULDN'T be a COUPLE, - in ANY sense of the word!
