I think the sigma 18-200 is a pretty good one for a reasonable price. probably a bit better than the tamron. Also, I've heard that the 18-200 is better than the 18-135.

Here's a review with comparative photos between the Tamron and the Sigma

definitely stay clear of the Canon kit lens.

of course, you will be giving up some image quality to go with such a large zoom range. But, the convenience of a single lens is often worth it for most non-pro photographers.

The EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens appears to be a real crappy lens, so I don't know why you'd want to consider using it on a camera like the 7D? From one review... "image quality delivered by this lens is ... well ... poor". "Overall, the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens' build quality is mediocre." "The Micro-USM (Ultrasonic Motor) on the 28-200 does not include FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing." "Overall, the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens optically disappoints." "Good sharpness generally requires at least f/5.6 or f/8 with this lens. Corners are soft at most focal lengths and aperture settings - with some being extremely soft." "I can't think of many scenarios that this lens would be ideal for. Ok, maybe none." But...to answer your question. Yes it's fully compatible with the new 7D. All EF lenses are compatible with ALL of Canon's digital SLRs.

I'd suggest staying with a Canon lens for your Canon. There are good after-market lenses such as Tamron or Tokina or Sigma.

You might want to go to shutterbug.com and in "Search" type in the lens you're interested in. If they've reviewed it it will pop up.
