it's true it comes naturally from within. We all believe that those who are capable of speaking in tongues are the ones who are gifted.

What does it mean to 'speak in tongues'?

There are differences of opinion as to precisely what the gift of tongues is. Some believe it is only speaking in foreign languages for purposes of evangelism. This is the manifestation that occurred on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2). Others believe that there is a spiritual prayer language that each person receives when they are baptized in (or into) the Holy Spirit, and that this is separate from a gift of speaking in foreign languages. In 1 Corinthians 14, when Paul discusses church order, he seems to be speaking about this type of prayer language.

Because there are scriptures that speak of both kinds of activity, and because the precise definition of "speaking in tongues" is controversial, it is a good idea to be gentle, patient and tolerant in using and speaking about this gift. Love and unity is more important.

A person's prayer language is very precious, and allows an expression of the heart to God without intervention of our limited understanding. This has value in itself. Rejoice at the freedom God has given you for prayer, but always be aware of church order and the unity of the Body

I was taught that it was something that is suppose to remain a between you and God- unless you are told you to speak by God ( no man can say speak in tongues at the church) to do so ( speak tounges)- means you have a message for someone- chances are you will be speaking another language and someone else will be able to understand it. Its in the bible when Jesus was preaching in the crowded room. I forgot where- let me look it up and get back to you.
I don't mind people speaking in tongues- most of the time I am in prayer or listening to what the preacher is saying so it doesn't bother me. I see it as a form of worship.

Hello,

I recall Paul mentioning that what is the point of speaking in tounges if nobody else can understand what you are saying anyway?

I can speak in different tongues since I studied English, Latin, French and Spanish and know a few simple one line phrases in Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Hindi. You do not need a zap from the holy spirit to accomplish that.

Born Again groups are the ones into it. I know for a fact that they teach their followers to speak in tongues. It comes naturally.

Peace and blessings!

I've been in some services that do this. What I have read in the Bible refers to different languages. I say this because in Acts everyone heard the message in their own language. So if speaking in tongues.. and they heard in their language, this doesn't say that they all had interpretation.of tongues. I know some churches put great emphasis on this, but tongues isn't listed first.
1 Co. 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
I know many will disagree with me on this, but every time I looked up tongues in various translations, it came out as language (a different language).
I leave it up to the individual to seek God on this.

In the bible, the 'gift of tongues' meant that anyone could understand your speech, no matter what language they spoke. For example, someone who had the 'gift of tongues' could be speaking to a crowd in Greek, and people who DID NOT UNDERSTAND Greek would hear and understand the speaker as if he were speaking in their own language... just like the 'babblefish' in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

Somewhere along the line, Christians got the idea that if they babbled incoherently, they were 'speaking in tongues'... and being touched by the Holy Spirit. It is actually just hysteria-induced gibberish... and self-delusion.

Of course, just like the 'babblefish', this is pure nonsense. It was nonsense in biblical times... it is nonsense now... it will still be nonsense tomorrow.

All that can be said is, I wish those individuals who believe in this would stop ignoring the OTHER verses; in the chapters of which they get this belief from. Speaking in tongues is just another way of saying, "you are speaking in a foreign language".

it's one of the gifts and it is like a special language just between you and God, except he's the only one who knows what you are praying for. Some churches have tried to control it by having their members practice it--but it's not something that is rehearsed or repetitious--it comes from the Holy Spirit and it is a very powerful way to pray.

it is possible....you will see some real...and some who fake it...

the real gift is given for intercession and witness to others of a different culture/language

i have the gift...and i can spend about 2 hours a day in prayer....the holy spirit enables me to pray for others....it is not necessary for me to know what I say but there are many words i recognize or could look up to see what they mean....it appears to be a mix of hebrew or arabic.....possibly aramaic, since both had that as a root language.....the real language flows out, and cannot be confused with "babbling"...just like any real language flows out of the person who is fluent in it..

It's a great show. I wonder why they never speak a recognizable language? They never speak French, Spanish or anything that even resembles a real language.
