Skin is darkened through the pigment in it. Sun or tanning in a sunlamp room or on a tanning bed works to darken that pigment. There is no way to lighten it back up except to stay away from the effects of the sun or sunlamps on the skin's pigment and it can eventually lighten back up. There is no guarantee as to how long that will take because each skin type is different. Some people never lighten back up. I don't even get tanned due to my pigment. I just burn and then the burn goes away eventually. If I burn too much or it is a bad burn like I got as a child before sunscreens came out, then it can leave a scarring on your skin too and also freckle it very bad. That is the same as old age spots do because sun ages the skin faster than it should so it give the old age effect just like people who get old. Normal tanning of the skin is a protective barrier put into the body by the creator to protect us from the sun's elements. Staying out of the sun or using methods to prevent tanning while in the sun is the only way sure way to stay light. There are some methods now on the market to help fade age spots and some types of freckles but not to lighten the entire pigment in your skin. Avoid the sun for a while (like a few summer seasons) and see if that helps. While you are avoiding the sun though, be sure to get your vitamin D by other methods or you will have other medical problems added to your dark skin.

If you want something really cheap, try applying lemon juice to the areas you want whitened. It stings like hell, but it definitely worked for me! You should also try to stay out of the sun and wear a good sunscreen when you do. Good luck!

no matter what others say, skin lightening AND skin tanning have the same objectives like better self-esteem and to correct skin pigmentation problems.. although skin lightening is more criticized in the US, a fair person will turn heads in an Asian country than a bronzed white.. it all differs in one's cultural identity and tradition.. MJ's case is different.. he started from maybe uneven skin tone and escalated to vanity.. there is a safer way to do things.. only if you know where to go and what to do..

read this article on how to lighten skin effectively..

Lemon juice and water, put it in a spray bottle with water and mist it on your skin. You'll have to do it several times. They also sell bleaching creams, but that will permanently discolor your skin and could leave funny pigment spots.

Stay out of the sun.

Unless maybe you are naturally tan.
But still if you stay out of the sun for long enough, you'll lose most of your tan.
