It may be a great surprise, but Germans use the same alphabet as English speaking people. It's called the Latin alphabet! I don't know the full version, but somehow the song has spread over many countries. I've even heard it in Turkish - same tune, same sentiment, different words.
In Germany it starts with 'Zum Geburtstag viel Gluck' which means, ' Good luck on your birthday.' This is repeated until you say the name of the birthday child.

We have the song "Happy Birthday to you" in German, same melody. I don't really know how to write the pronounciation for an english speaker but I try:

Zum Geburtstag viel Glück (tsoom gay-boorts-tug feel glick (don't know how to write ü in English letters))
zum Geburtstag viel Glück
zum Geburtstag, liebe(r)....., (...lee-ba and then the name for a woman, lee-bear for a man)
zum Geburtstag viel Glück

But you can also sing it in English, everyone knows it.

Zum Geburtstag viel Glueck. Zum Geburtstag viel Glueck. Zum Geburtstag lieb/lieber....... Zum Geburtstag viel Glueck!
But everything has become so Americanized that we too sing the English version.

German native
