I'm not so sure... considering that the majority believes the rest of us who don't believe in their particular version of Deity will burn forever, tormented for eternity. This doesn't sound like they can't handle the thought of death in general..... sounds more like they enjoy the idea of someone else taking revenge on those they dislike.

I think, in the beginning, the many stories of the different deities was more to give primitive people an understanding of what was happening in the world around them. Much like today we see people claiming their God(s) brought down certain catastrophes upon people... example: Hurricane Katrina... I was told by a few that this happened because we allow homosexuality in America (I have a hard time with this... how do you stop people from having sex in their own homes? And how is that, exactly, us Allowing it to happen? First person who tries to spy into my bedroom might get shot by my husband.) If a tornado tore apart one farm, but left the one right next to it standing, they would say the farmer who lost his farm ticked off a God and should do something to appease that deity. They didn't believe such things happened randomly or because of a change elsewhere (such as a volcano erupting, causing the weather to change). The idea of an afterlife wasn't as "comforting" as some beliefs are today, where they get to live forever in a nice place and praise their God(s) for eternity (this doesn't put a whole lot of importance on this life, imo).

My answer would be: "No" and "Yes" (certainly not trying to be clever!!).

"No" coz God exists as an uncaused Cause of all creation! Its from that existence of God we derive our "being". If its an invention of a weak man, my first question would be how does a man get to know that he is weak (leave alone the meaning of weakness)? And on what basis does he distinguish between weakness and strength?

If its an invention of a man who cant handle the thought of death, it simply becomes an invention out of helplessness or fear coz of ignorance of what happens after death! Why is he not able to handle death, in the first place? You cant possibly answer the ultimate questions of life -- Where did man come from?; What gives meaning to life?; How to know good from evil? ; What is his destiny? and so on...unless a God exists!!

"Yes" coz when man does not know who that God is (which is worth exploring!!), he begins to certainly hold on to either ignorance or faulty knowledge of God. So he develops as many concepts of god as he likes/needs that will suit his existential struggles!! Whatever "god" man creates in this sense, it is his invention only!!

Hope that helps... Need more such helps? Pl mail me at victor@rzimindia.org

If man invented the concept of God, then how is it possible that so many religions have the same "myths"? For example, nearly every religion has a creation, underworld, and flood myth, and they usually almost parallell each other [the same general thing happens]. On top of that, if you read the Bible and the Koran, they both have the same people in it. They just don't believe the exact same thing, because it was written by people who percieved God differently. Think of people, and how we can't agree on anything, and then ask yourself if all of these striking similarities are possible without the existence of some truth in them, especially worldwide and throughout religions that had no idea of the existence of one another.

In general, I think gods were created to help explain things people didn't understand. Death would be just one of those things. Think about the gods of the ancient Greeks or the Vikings.

I think the reason religion survives today is because of tradition and because people feel comfortable with the idea there is something higher they can attribute things to. For example, why is it that people explain the falling tree missing the child as an act of God rather than random chance.

I see it more as an invention of man because man can't deal with the fact that life might not have a purpose.

I think God was created to give man a purpose. We all like to feel that we're here to accomplish something, so God was invented to give us that opportunity to feel like we actually make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

No.

If you want to look at it from a secular viewpoint, man has created God or gods to explain life! The common element in religious faiths (both modern and historical)is an explanation of creation. In between, you have a look at the cultural look of the faith in HOW to live, and finally, how to die. The nature of life after death reflects the societies viewpoint in what a noble way to die is. These viewpoints range from death in battle (viking) to rirtual suicide (Hindu).

Thus, my thought is IF man created the concept of God, it was because he wanted to explain life, not death.

That is a good question and funnily enough I was just asked that the other day, some might say that religion is a game of charade, and truley believe that there is nothing but evolution, for example. Others may have not even questioned the concept . If a group of people can tell a lie(this is another example only) and get other people to support it and keep it going in the group and instill that much fear that the group is terrified to change their way of thinking, would this not support the lie.It is a real confronting question. I believe that fear supports fear and can be contagious, there is nothing to fear but fear itself. love and light

No, it is just just the opposite. Man is a concept and creation of God, and made by God in God's own likeness.

god is a concept invented by man, but it was more for explanatory purposes. look at most forms of mythology. you see plenty of explanations for the state of the world.

also, some religions, even older ones, have no concept of an afterlife. something to think about...

Not is not like that.
And you don't have to believe if you don't want.
But if you don't believe Why do you do the works of satan to bring disbelief in other people.

If you look for consensus it is because you are in denial of everything that reperesents the true.

You have to find out What is driving you to say such things.
You have to find out first if you have been indoctrinated by social convictions and educated dogmas. whether religious or unreligious. This world is made so by satan, he makes a man stupid to drive car while intoxicated and another stupid to look at a woman in the streets, killing one and throwing the other one in jail. Because they have no wisdom apart from God.
