I'm starting to get tired of these rude people who use their cell phones at the most inopportune time. Being on the phone while trying to conduct buisness like at a cash register. Or being in the middle of a conversation with someone and picking up the cell to talk to another. And I especially hate people who talk on phones while driving. A few days ago I was almost T-boned at an intersection because the guy was on his phone and didn't notice his RED light. It was pure luck that I happen to look over and see him. And he never even got off the cell phone! I just want to know why you do it. Why be on the cell phone at such bad times?

This bad habbit stems from this extreme sense of self that our culture has developed. Everyone thinks that their business or their social needs outweigh someone else's safety or convenience.

UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH.

I used to work in a pharmacy and it's illegal, at least here in PA, to help a customer who is on their cell phone, whether it was at the counter or in the drive thru. People would get so upset but we couldn't take them because of HIPPA and privacy concerns and it wasn't like I ever WANTED to wait on a customer who wasn't able or willing to get off the phone to interact with me.

Now I work just as a cashier and I don't even acknowledge people who come through my line on their phones - I just ring them up, point to the total and look the other way, hoping they'll get the message. Unlikely, I guess.

There aren't a whole lot of things that bother me more than bad cell phone manners, driving while talking included.

I've been cell phone free for almost a year and found that I haven't missed it or needed it once!

I'm guessing it's self-centeredness. I have looked at my cell if it rings when I'm talking with someone because my mom is getting up there and if she has a problem, I want to know. Usually I look and ignore it. Part of it is the fact for some it's still a toy. I have gotten calls when I'm driving. I usually answer, tell the person I'm driving, and then find a place to park and call back. I was playing golf the other day and the woman I was with kept getting calls and calling people. However, she's insecure and needs everyone to know how popular she is.

Cell phones have just taken rudeness to a new level. There should be classes in cell phone etiquette but the "I'm the only important person here" people probably would skip the class. And let's not even get on about Bluetooth!!! What an annoyance!

Mine's usually got the ringtone turned off. I think the worst time MIGHT be when you THINK the ringtone's off and vibrate's on, but you're in the middle of a sale or a discussion at work when you're not allowed to have a cell phone on you and then it rings....

Being one who is also annoyed with such behavior, I can only speculate about the "why?" My feeling is that it is simple as being just as you said, rude. Such people have an uncontrollable need to "communicate" with others, regardless of what else may be occurring. It is most likely the result of self-esteem issues, the need to be needed/wanted/noticed. The most annoying and least easily to explain is two people in the same store, different depts., thinking they have to call one another to share what they have found.

We live in a world of self-centered techno-geeks. :)

And there is my 1.5 cents.

people do this because they don't assume that an accident might happen, or the call could slow down the line at the cash register. it's just because people are ignorant, and don't think anything else is more important than picking up the call, or dialing up someone

They're idiots.
Although I wont lie, I am prob guilty of this, but just a couple times without realizing how rude it is, other than that I know its a terrible habit.

just rude... they have no manners. there is nothing worse then trying to speak to someone or serve them, or sell them something and they are talking on their cell.

just plain stupidity
