The highlighted text would automatically delete if you press the Delete key. However, highlighted text also occurs when you want to cut some text out of the paragraph or page and paste it onto another text, or even make a copy of it as well.
To correct this, highlight the text that you want deleted, and press the Delete key. I'm sure that it will work once again.

I think this could have changed if you updated from 2002 to 2003 version, but as people have already said, you can either go into format or use the insert key which possibly you pressed by mistake for delete at one time.

The insert button just means that word will over type anything after where you have highlighted, I can't say that I have ever experienced this problem.

Press the insert botton [ at the top of you key board to the right, generally], it will allows you to overwrite it with out messing up the other text.

press the insert button. Its up next to delete on your keyboard. If you press the insert button it will allow you to over-ride any typing that is already there.
