Think of how you would feel if your spouse/boyfriend brought a new girlfriend home to live with you.\
Now given time and the right treatment the two of you might become wonderful friends and live harmoniously together.
I think that for dogs it is good to have another dog for company especially if their humans are gone a lot.
Male or female shouldnt really matter especially if you intend to have the new one neutered as well.
What will help a lot is how you introduce the new dog. Let them meet on neutral territory and establish at least the beginnings of a relationship before entering your home.
Then be sure to spend time individually with each of them so that they know they have your support.
If your present dog is somewhat jealous of your company you can get a little stuffed plush dog before getting the real one and cuddle it and let your dog know that good things happen for him when you are cuddling the plush doggie, like treats and cuddles for him too.
Dogs are all about social heirarchy and will end up establishing their own pecking order amongst themselves. This happens a lot quicker if you dont interfere when they do have a little scuffle.
Once they have decided who amongst them is top dog, then its done, there is no need to keep fighting about it. So any animosity between them should be over quickly enough, as I have said unless you interfere.
Of course if it appears that someone is going to get badly hurt you would excercise your own judgement.

I wouldn't worry about another male. If both had been snipped (which is cruel), neither will be interested in being top dog. They'll be too confused with their snipped organs to worry about anything else. I wish people would stop neutering animals simply because vets advise it. Yes, it does make them docile but it also makes a lot of money for vets. Next time, get your husband done as well, better still, we should have laws for every human to be neutered. Imagine what a lovely world we would have! No war! Just billions of docile animals wondering around and looking totally confused LOL

he is not a dominating dog like a rott or dobby so you shouldnt have to much or a problem with the same sex. I have 2 dogs however i have 2 different breeds and 1 of each sex. Usually MOST dogs will not have a problem if you get another dog of the same sex as long as they are a puppy.
make sure you still establish to your current dog that he did not lose your attention and that he is dominant. Feed HIM first this helps him by easing him into it and letting him know now everything is going to change,
Our male yorkie was 6 months when we got our female boxer and he hated her at first. wanted nothing to do with her but we kept him knowing he was the main dog of the house and he warmed up to her no problem now you can not seperate them without them crying.

If your dachshund is anything like mine, I would not advise getting another dog. We just recently got a puppy and the (male) dachshund snaps at her when she is just walking past him, even if he does not have any food or toys in front of him. We have caught him pinning her on the ground while she screeches. It is really become a problem in our house, so maybe a male would be better.

All dogs weather neutered or not will seek dominance. However, once they are neutered its not as big a deal. They may have a few scuffles but, once one is declared top dog they will settle down.
