My husband hired a car at weekend and while he was driving, he managed to get a stone chip in the windscreen. The hire company has told him he needs to pay £503 for a new windscreen (there was a £600 excess on the insurance policy)
Does hire car insurance differ from normal car insurance? If he had cracked his own windscreen, he would have only had to pay the first £50 as most policies offer windscreen protection don't they? Should he have to pay this?
Thanks for any answers

He knew there was a £600 excess but nothing was mentioned about additional windscreen cover

I always take out additional insurance to reduce the excess. I can afford say £100 but I could not afford £200
Sorry you will just have to put it down to experience

All policies have different excesses, if this policy had an excess of £600 and there was no specific additional windscreen cover, then he will have to pay this amount. I would be interested however to know if he was made fully aware of this large excess when he hired the car. Incidently I hired a car from Mahon airport in June, I was told that there was an excess of 900 euros (£600) i had to take out an aditional insurance to reduce the excess to an acceptable level. It's a case I think of always reading the small print.

Most hire firms have a £500 excess. I hired a car recently and paid extra on insurance in order not to pay this if a had an accident/windscreen chipped or tyres. Unfortunately I did have a minor accident, not my fault, someone went into the back of my car. I took the car back, it was replaced by another car straight away and I did not pay extra.

Car hire sometimes comes with insurance, but that is expensive and the excess can be £500. Just give a few car hire companies a call.

On 2 occasions I got stone chips on the windscreen of a hire car. I took it to a repair shop and the hire company was none the wiser. £25 and on my way! Sure beats the excess!

First the charge for a new windscreen does sound a bit much
I honestly think he as been ripped off.
telephone around and ask for quotes for the same type of car if the price differs from the one they charged for, report them it is fraud plain and simple.
or ask to see a copy of the companies insurance to see if in fact they have no cover for windscreens, most insurance companies glass is excluded as a claim and you dont even lose your NCB.

The hire company will have some form of fleet insurance cover, different from the sort you or I have. However, I think they've seen him coming, most stone chips can be repaired for a fraction of the cost.

Like everything else we sign for, it's important to read the contract. All car hire firms allow you to pay a little extra to reduce the excess.

I also take chances sometimes. Some I win, some I lose.

Sorry I can't help.

If thats what is said in the Contract then yes...should read the small print...I'm sure the excess could have been removed but would have had to pay some sort of extra waiver fee...they get their money from you someway...sorry.
