actually, my husband and I used a PT cruiser convertable as our getaway car, and I arrived in it as well.
it was pretty good as far as fitting my dress and everything inside it, which we couldn't do in some of the other cars we considered using. and it was great fun to drive home with the top down to get that hairspray off my head a bit.
stay away from black though. see if you can rent one in your wedding color for an extra touch of originality. I couldn't have been happier with mine, I think the standard town cars or limos are boring.
if your spouse-to-be is for it, knock yourselves out. you'll only do it once if you do it right, so go wild with it.

See the problem with the PT Cruiser is that it is almost an old car. and yet nothing like an old car. The Ford Tbird at least really looks like there old car.
I am an antique car enthusiast and I went through a hard time limiting it to just one. My uncle wanted me to use his 39 Mercury, or 55 Chevy, my dad wanted me to use his 71 Ford. I have some friends that virtually have Jay Leno's collection--over 25 antique cars, most bought at Hershey. If you are into an old car, you'd want an old car. If you aren't into an old car, a PT Cruiser is too much like one for you.
I wanted a convertible too for ease of pictures. I had two--a 56 Buick Special and a 58 Cadillac. Both were a beautiful coral which was really close to my wedding colors. I didn't have to worry about "decorating" b/c none of the groomsmen would have dared touch that nice of a car. The problem with a PT is its just a normal car--not a Rolls or a limo or even a cadillac, it's just a chrysler-- and I'd think that chauffeur would spend the whole night trying to run people off of his car.

My fiance and I have been thinking about that, too. I think it's kind of cool. The PT Cruiser is the closest new car out there to look like the old classic cars of the 40's. I, personally, like the idea of something other than the normal limo. And it should be reasonably easy to find and not super expensive, either.
I looked for old cars and the ones I could find were usually Bentleys, which would cost so much to rent. The PT Cruiser is a nice alternative. I don't think it looks like a Hearse, as another person who answered did. They come in many colors anyway, so you can have your choice and not just be limited to black if that is not your taste.
Congratulations on getting married! Enjoy your day... and remember, your friends and family know you and your tastes and they're going to be happy for you and I don't think they're going to be petty and whisper about your choices for things on your wedding day. So, do what you think works best for you and your fiance.

Personally I don't like them. However, I own a limousine company and people are always looking for something different. We are in Ireland and brides here love the vintage cars that we have. The stretched lincoln is also used although its more popular for nights out. A lot of people here are going for stretched Hummers which I think are terrible and certainly not made for the small country roads in these country.
However, go with what you want, don't worry about other people. This is your wedding no-one else's. The only thing I would say to you and anyone else if you're using a limousine hire company go and look at the cars for yourself, don't take someones word for what they are like.

Absolutely dreadful, PT looks like a hearse.
Rent something with class. There are specialist car rental companies who can let you have something really cool, or old, or both.
A PT Cruiser is just a sad excuse for a pastiche of a hot rod. If that's what you want, get the real thing - they can probably be hired...

phantom_of_valkyrie the moron said "The problem with a PT is its just a normal car--not a Rolls or a limo or even a cadillac, it's just a chrysler--" If you really knew anything you would know that in the day people with money bought Cadillac's and people who REALLY had money bought Chrysler's..
At one time they made a special run of two limo's, one for the the place formally known as the Whitehouse and one for the Mayor of New York
city. Get a clue before opening your food hole.

Don't fancy that idea much. We don't have the problem of hiring cars as daughter getting married in hotel so staying there night before and on the night.
