What is the performance difference between the .300 Winchester Mangum and the .300 Winchester Short Magnum? As following using the 180 grain bullet in both and an 8-1/4 lb. rifle:

.300 Win Mag: Velocity 2,960 fps; felt recoil: 25.9 lbs. at shoulder.

.300 WSM: Velocity 2,970 fps; felt recoi: 23.8 lbs. at shoulder.

The performance is virtually identical with the short mag. recoiling slightly less and developing 10 more feet per second of velocity.

Best.

I don't know where Mr. Hawks got his loads, which are reasonable, but D58 has a point. Handloading makes a lot of sense with wartime pricing, especially on the WSM. All else being equal, you can expect your handloads in the longer case to go about 50 fps faster with the 180 grain loads, and most people find that's heavy enough for anything they want to do with a 30 caliber bullet. If for some reason to feel the need for a heavier bullet, the difference will be greater, again assuming you keep to SAAMI OAL's. With a little extra freebore, that difference could disappear by loading longer. These are all theoretical, and no critter is ever going to know the difference.

In performance none to speak of.
Where you will see the true difference is in the price of ammo.
The WSM will around twice as much per box as the standard magnum.
I would stick with the 300 Winchester Magnum and save a bunch on ammo if I were you.

both of these are virtually the same. there are a few difference between the velocities and energy, but not enough to make a major difference between the two. the reason the wsm was developed, was the shorten the distance of the action, making it faster and smoother to cycle the next round into the chamber.

The short mag is an interesting solution to a non existing problem that most likely came about to create a new sales market. This is American and we can do it so we do.

Flatter shooting ballistic curve at long range. Not by much however. The real difference is not having a long action.

the critter you shoot will never know...the main differance is barrel overheating and erosion with short magnums...they are a fad hopefully short lived...
