I meant sth else. We have the names of a few diseases in our Biology book, for example the flu(caused by viruses) & Tetanus(caused by bacteria). Should we memorize them?

Of course there is, this is why I went to med school for four hard and grueling years. You have to see the doctor first, then he'll order tests, some he can take due to entering the body and by law, he has to do that. Then the tests are sent to the lab where they'll make the tests according to what the doctor determines the disease "might" be.
These tests can be made from a matter of a few moments to days. Sometimes cultures have to be grown to make sure they're what they seem to be, then the proper anti-biotic or anti-viral medication has to be found, there are literally thousands out there, one might help. Then the doctor is told of the results, he may take the labs answers into consideration but, again, he might just use something different. That's up to him.

Infections from a virus or bacteria will have different symptoms. Usually a bacterial infection will have symptoms of high fever, viral; a low grade temp, malaise. Viral infections usually have a longer course of healing. Do not take antibiotics for everything. Have your physician thoroughly diagnosis you accurately, overuse of antibiotics can create a host of other problems; MRSA, VRE, C-diff.

Yes there is a way of telling ask your gp and ask if he/she can take some blood tests to find out what type of virus or bacterial infection you have.

also you can go to a genetic counsillor and they can test you and a friend or family member for your history on the causes if there are any and if you are planing on having a family in the future

First of all you need to see a Dr.. Generaly, if your problem is enternal (such as imune, blood, organ, gene ect.) the Dr. will draw some blood. If its external (such as throut, nose, vagina, penis, oosing sore) they can swab the area, smear sample into a petri dish and send off to a lab to be observed for any growth.

Take an antibiotic... if it is healed, it is a bacterial infection... but if it is a virus, the symptoms will just lessen
