Their might be one source, but there are many paths to reach it.
Not all people are the same as such each person takes a path that best fits his nature.

my personal theory is that it is all involved with politics. you'll find that religions in a certian area go really well with whatever the governemtn at the time was for. just look at Constantine and christanity. no religion would survive unless it had a political champion, like a emperor or at least several high-ranking people with a lot of sway.
religion is pretty hard when it comes to deciding where the line is between trying to respect a different religion but still being strong in your own and being firm that it is right. that's part of the reason tempers run so high on the R&S board here.

Religion is a very lucrative tax free business which for some reason God has no control over. So new ones pop like mushrooms all with a slightly different twist on what God said. Religion now takes in $3 billion a year in donations and they are trying for $4 billion.

Cultural and societal differences in intrepreting and receiving God. I think it's akin to many streams and brooks that run into a larger river and then into the ocean.
I suppose I'm not a 'good' Christian in that I don't like to proselytize - I've been a victim of having rightwing evangelical proselyizing to me(I'm not 'their' brand of Christianity, therefore I'm not "saved" in their eyes). I admit to being a sinner and I usually miss the spiritual 'mark', but I keep trying and my spiritual walk is on-going.
I strive to focus on what's best in the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Also the best of Hinduism, Shintoism, Buddhism and various pagan, neo-pagan and shamanic paths(ie-America Indians, Saami-Finland, Romani).

there are so many religions, because back in the day, when people didnt agree on something about a certain religion, they would make up their own religion.
they all branched out of 1 religion. 1 holy book.
thats why most religions are similar in a way.

There are many religions because that is man's way to getting to God, not God's way.

The problem is that there is one God but many sinners. Religions are failed attempts to reach God. Christianity is God reaching out to man.
