As an atheist I have to say here that it is a two-way street and there is not "one who started it" (although a couple of hundred years ago I would face a heresy trial for my lack of belief). There are nice and rude people in both camps. I would probably be in the rude camp.

Yes, how unfortunately correct you are. I'm pretty good at blistering responses, and I know the Bible well enough to make someone cut and bleed. I am absolutely on Yahoo! to make a COMPLETELY uncompromising stand for God's Word, as should be obvious my Avatar. Here is MY problem:
1Pe 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
I posted that in KJV, other versions translate "meekness and respect". I never have any problem giving an answer for my faith, it's that gentleness and respect part that makes a hypocrite out of me. I'm no better than the worst atheist; I'm a murderer. Didn't Jesus say that if you have thought it, you may as well have done it?
I am not yet a Top Contributer here in R & S, but I soon will be because of my Biblical knowledge and my superior answers (that ought to put a few atheists ROFL), so please allow me to apologize on behalf of rude Christians. I would say to the questioner that I strongly DISAGREE with some of the Catholic Church teachings, but some of my BEST FRIENDS are Catholic. As long as we are agreed upon salvation by grace and the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, the rest is immaterial; our commonality in Christ is greater than our differences.
Perhaps that is why Dr. Billy Graham is so popular even among the heathen: he preaches the good news of the Gospel, and allows the Holy Spirit to do His job of conviction:
Isa 52:7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!
How about if I promise to TRY to be nicer?
In His Service,
John the Baptist

I'm nice to Atheists because I understand where they're coming from. Atheism/agnosticism ought to be the default belief everyone starts from, but ignorant Christians- the kind who don't read their Bibles or get their facts straight, but instead prefer the crying and the noise and the gettin' whooped up at church- are scared of Atheists because their Christianity is weak and they've never known that the God of the Bible is the God of Reason, so they lash out at what they don't understand. I saw a video recently of a highschool girl in Texas who- along with her parents- wants to get the book Fahrenheit 451 banned from her school because they burn the Bible in it, and she and her family are baptists. That is just some seriously ironic ignorance and intolerance there! I think if people just read their Bibles and humbled themselves and emulated Jesus' behavior it would eliminate a lot of unnecessary problems.

HypnoPope is actually one of the more intelligent and reasonable Atheists here; he's just modest.
I attack stupid Christians as much as I attack stupid Atheists here. I see no need to discriminate based on religion when I can discriminate on something that makes that person an individual.
The worst ones are the ones who have converted from one belief to another, since they carry a personal vendetta against their former faith--just check out some of the ignorant rants that "get_a_clue" poops out--now that's an Atheist that deserves rudeness!

Thank you. A lot of christians on here are rude and attack our views simply because we have different ideas about the world. Maybe it's hard for some people to accept others that are unlike themselves.
It's not all Christians though-- and some Atheists are a problem too just for the fun of it.

everyone on here gets a little heated because religion can be such a touchy subject for almost everyone on here. the problem is that so many people have fostered a sense of being a "missionary" constantly, it is hard for them to discuss without trying to convert or getting angry.
and by the way, I don't think they give their entire religion a bad name, they just make sure I'll never join those ranks (as you pointed out)

I have many atheist friends in real life, and also online. I have, to my knowledge, never been hostile to an atheist. It would be a violation of my religious principles to discriminate against someone because of their religion (or lack thereof). Not to mention that it's just bad manners.

Thank you--it's nice to see someone on the other side who doesn't hate us. Perhaps there is hope for you guys after all. ;)
However, not all atheists are innocent and not all Christians are bullies. There has been fighting from both sides, unfortunately.

Im agnostic but onother good question would be why can you atheists be so nice to christians.
though they claim relegion is bad i think (though i dont have one) that relegion on the whole is benefecial despite there being small numbers of dumb @$$'s and extremists.

I am a catholic too, and I understand. Atheists are people just like us, and just because they don't believe in god, it doesn't mean we have to shun them. take them for who they are, and stop being rude, and they'll stop being ride to you. not everyone is going to believe in god, so don't be pushy, let them live their life, and you live yours.
