She might have an old version of word. If so, she should download a converter.

And doing a virus scan might not be a bad idea too.

Could be a virus but probably not. I suggest she uninstalls Word then re-installs it from the disk it came on.

Probably the file "normal.dot" has got corrupted. It happens occasionally. Just delete it and it will re-create next time word closes. Any special settings like font style will have to be re-selected.
