This is actually a very good question. I take this for granted because I have my own table, so I really have to think about this. There were some good answers listed already. If you have a friend with a table, it's definitely a good option. Any place where you can rent tables by the hour is usually a good sign. If you're going somewhere with only coin-op bar tables, you're going to have to deal with people throwing their quarters on the table and always trying to take the table away from you. When you rent your own table, people tend to leave you alone. Pool halls are usually your best bet for this, although there are some places that just have a few tables to rent and aren't exactly pool halls. You just need to ask around to find those places. I heard bowling alleys mentioned, and I agree with that as well. I can understand you not being fond of bars. Unfortunately, the majority of public pool tables are located in bars. You mentioned being a beginner. This means that you're probably in the early phases of learning the game. I would caution you to consider the source when getting advice from others. Very often, there will be well-meaning people willing to offer their opinions and occasionally they may say something useful, but far too often, you're going to get your head filled with a bunch of myths and nonesense about the game. I would recommend that you look into formal pool instruction from a certified teacher. It's the best investment you can ever make for your pool game. To supplement instruction, there are also a lot of good books and videos on the subject. Another word of caution, don't believe everything your read in books either. Books are more likely to have accurate information, but there's still a lot of disinformation. You need to basically pick and choose what makes sense to you when reading a book, sort of like a salad bar. Best of luck and have fun. M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

If you truly have a love for the game look at the APA, stands for American pool Players. It is a league where you as a new player would be an incredible asset to a team as they must have a good balance of advanced and novice players to succeed. They do however play in Bars but there is a distinct separation from the teams and normal cliental. As long as you come and go with your team you’ll have no problems normally associated with the Bar scene.

I agree with Straight about finding a place where you can pay by the hour...If you find a place with several tables (8 or more hopefully 9 ft. tables...), you've probably found a good place. Look for a place with pool or billiards in the name, or a place called Breakers or Sharky's or Snooker's or Fast Eddie's or something like that. I suggest the early afternoon hours if you want to have a quiet, low-key atmosphere to play in (hope your work schedule allows it)...If you're working on drills, be prepared to say so when the inevitable suitor approaches, unless of course you want someone to play with.
Also, as someone mentioned above, APA leagues are a great way to get involved with pool. Depending on where you live, you may indeed have to play in a regular bar on probably 7 ft. tables, but some places, like my league in NC, play only in actual pool rooms with 9 ft. tables (I think there's actually one host location with 8 ft. tables).
Good luck and enjoy. Glad to welcome someone new :)

Some bars are "dives" and better to stay away from them. Plus the music is usually too loud for me to enjoy myself.
Check out the yellow pages for pool rooms from the area you're in and pay them a visit. People generally mind their own business and don't interfere with you.
Also, many bowling lanes have one or two tables. Some in larger cities have six or eight.
Either way, the pool room or the bowling lanes will give you more privacy. Good luck.

The best place is a pool hall, where it would make the presence of a lady very desirable, especially if she is Good.

Pool halls, such as Anazah Sands, are the best places to go and are the best ways to learn the game.

Some apartment complexes have community tables. Of course you must know someone in the complex to play there, and they're often poorly maintained, but it's an option.
