Most people who have studied both, and that includes me, find that the difficulty with basic acquisition is about the same for French and Spanish. The real difference comes in trying to communicate orally. Most English speakers find Spanish spoken sounds to be only moderately difficult to mimic. French spoken sounds, on the other hand, are quite difficult to mimic. If you have a good ear for duplicating what you hear, go for the French that you already feel attracted to. But if you have difficulty mimicking voice sounds accurately, expect some trouble with communicating in French.

There was a famous book called "Where is the War?" that is now out of print. The author discussed travel in France and language difficulties (the title comes from mistakenly saying guerre instead of gare). He said that one day he was very near the town of Verdun, the scene of a historic battle in 1916. When he asked several people along the highway how to get to Verdun, no one understood his pronunciation. Even after he explained to an old man that it was the site of a historic battle where hundreds of thousands were killed, he only got the response, "It is a pity, this battle, but I never heard of the place." Finally, he showed the old man the name Verdun on a map. "Oh, Verdun! Why didn't you say so? It's about 20 minutes down the road."

Besides the choice of which you like or which is easier, you should consider whether or not you will use one of these languages. In the Americas, Spanish is a common language. In West Africa, French is a common language. Will you plan to use one of these languages in the future?

Spanish is much more widely spoken. The world's most popular languages are English, Spanish and Chinese.

I suppose it depends on whether you want to go to France lol! If you would like to work or travel in South America it would be good to learn Spanish, but a lot of countries in Africa speak French.

French is more difficult. Spanish is much easier to spell and pronounce correctly. Spanish would probably be more useful, but French would make you more refined, if you could speak it well.
