That would have to be my TiVo (DVR). After my internet-connected laptop of course.

TiVo changed my life almost as much as my computer did a few years earlier. The joy of never having to sit through a commercial again, letting the drama (or comedy, or "reality" or competition) continue without hardly skipping a beat is nothing short of a revelation in broadcast entertainment.

WARNING: a lot of people (inlcuding those sneaky cable and satellite companies) have been caught using the term "TiVo" in reference to their non TiVo-brand digital video recorders (DVRs). DO NOT BE FOOLED: There's NOTHING quite like a true TiVo. But like "Kleenex" and "Clorox", since TiVo defined the DVR-type viewing experience, every other DVR gets to be called "a TiVo" - BUT THEY'RE NOT!

TiVo is the ONLY DVR to make cool, non-annoying, and kind of satisfying sounds when you perform an action or function. This is one of the main reasons its so easy to learn how to use and enjoy - it uses another part of your brain, your ears AND your eyes. More brain-power in use = faster enjoyment and perhaps as important: understanding what you're doing.

The other reason its head-and-shoulders above the competition is that the on-screen graphical user interface (or GUI) is superior to all others. Its a great GUI environment, and it "moves" and functions in a very intuitive way.

Its a lot to explain, but beleive me, once you use a TiVo, you'll hate al lthe other DVRs out there.

So what if your satellite or cable company wants you to use their DVRs? Tell them to take a hike! You can always get their basic tuners and TiVo will manage them effortlessly. Sure, it means two boxes instead of one, but once you have TiVo online, you can essentially HIDE the cable or satellite box because the TiVo is the only thing you'll have to point your remote at from then on. (Actually, if you upgrade your remote control, you might not even have to point your remote at anything at all, just stick everything in a closet or cabinet and hold the remote any way you want.) Except the TV of course, you'll still want to look at that...right? =;-)
