Do not use dish soap on a cat. It is too strong and will burn their skin. Get special soap at the vets. If there are fleas in the house, they are probably in carpet. Fleas would just get on the cats again unless friend gets rid of them. She can get a flea bomb from vet. My mother-in-law had fleas in her carpet, and that is what the vet said to do. When the bomb is set off, the cats cannot be in the house for several hours, or it will make them sick. I kept the cats during that time, but can't remember how long. The vet would advise that. Flea collars are not recommended. A dose of flea killer applied directly to back of cat's neck is very effective. This can be purchased at places such as Wal-Mart, Target, or pet stores, as well as the vet's.

If you're worried about it, put a small screen over it (a kitchen strainer will work) and the fleas will get through and the cats won't be able to. Whether it will work or not remains to be seen, because you need to kill the flea eggs, too. You need to find out where the fleas are coming from or you'll never be completely rid of them.

can you go to the vets and just get some advantix or some other type of flea drops? Those are really the safest and most effective flea preventatives out there. Just make sure that the cats dont lick each other for awhile after applying the drops, until the liquid dries.

I have two cats and bathe them in Dawn original dish soap. I lather them up, leave it on for a few minutes and it kills the fleas. It also helps repell them.
I just wet the cat, lather them up good...covered in the soap lather....will look like you after shampooing your hair....let it sit a few minutes....then, rinse with warm water and dry well. Empty the water when you're done....wash them in the tub/sink and the water goes directly down the drain. If the cats are around, doubt they'll want to even drink the soapy water.

I don't think dish detergent would be toxic to your cat, but you can certainly look at the label for contact information, and they could certainly tell you at the manufacturer.
My remedy to fleas is as follows:
Spread 20 Mule Team borax on your carpet and leave for a week. Vacuum it up. Fleas and eggs will all be dead.
Spray insecticide on your lawn to kill the fleas in that area.
Dip, and flea collar your kitty!
Hope this helps!
