I'm going to take one more stab at this . . . *sigh*

The standard rationale seems to be based on a bible verse claiming that "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." I'd like to take issue with that---

1. There are many gods. Even the god of the bible admits this . . . and I follow *other* gods. Applying biblical ideas of sin to ME is like Hindus blaming YOU for not burning enough incense to Krishna or something, isn't it? Or condemning artists for not being engineers?

2. Doesn't "fallen short of the glory of god" seem like an unrealistic standard, given that the god in question defines himself as "perfect?" This seems like a classic Catch-22 to me: he creates an inferior species and then blames them for his shoddy handiwork? Would you think a boss was fair who assigned you tasks for which you did not have the tools?

3. EVERY human, honest trait somehow gets redefined under this system as "sin" . . . why, I have to ask, should I feel guilty about pleasure?

Sin is for people who believe in it. The rest of us are just making choices and living our lives. That means that we are not 'all sinners' but good luck getting that across to a victim of brainwashing.

Their idea that everyone else's Gods are myths comes from their misinformed notion of what a "myth" is. . . Among academics, a myth is simply a sacred narrative about the origins of the world. A myth is believed to be true by the people (culture) from which it came because religious or spiritual significance is attached to it. When used by academics, the term is not meant to imply that the sacred narrative is either true or false. I'll never forget what one Anthropology professor said in a lecture: "One man's myth is another man's religion." The professor went on to explain that the use of the term outside of academica had taken on the implication that the religious narratives of a culture other than your own is considered mythology; therefore untrue; but that your own culture's sacred narratives would not be considered mythology, and therefore, true. Because of this usage (outside of academia) many people take offense when the religious narratives they believe to be true are called myths. But strictly speaking, a myth is simply the academic term used to describe the sacred narratives of a given culture.

Well you know that sin was only invented so the church could control the masses. It has nothing to do with anything real.

I just love that sentence, "...he creates an inferior species and then blames them for his shoddy handiwork..." That's gold!

1. No, there is only one God. I argue about this below, but another answerer touched on the fact that the Bible does not say there are other gods-quite the contrary. Because there are no other gods than Him, we should not worship any other "gods".

2. But it's not as if God expects us to live by His standard. What he does expect us to do is respond to whom he sent to Earth to save us from sin-Jesus Christ. The response is repentance and faith in Jesus.

3. Because it's wrong. I don't care how good masturbating feels; it's still wrong. You should feel guilty about something if it's wrong. Feelings don't prove anything. Remember that. Something can feel good and be good, while it may feel good and be so wrong.

And you get defined under sin because every person is a sinner. Would you have me believe otherwise? Would you have me believe that people are born or naturally/innately good? Not going to happen. I've actually heard people who cannot call the VA Tech killer "evil". How many more bad things did he need to do, other than kill 32 people, in order for someone to call him "evil"? Your worldview will be much more consistent when you look at people as innately bad, and only God as innately good.

Since you believe in multiple gods, you don't have a clear grasp of the very definition of God. By definition, only one can exist, and by nature, only He is good.

The first Adam had the ablitiy to be perfect, but fell into sin. In the same way the human race has inherited sin, through Adam. Sin is anything contrary to the word of God.

1. There is only one God. When God says "you shall have no other gods before me," he means "Don't worship anything else, because I'm the only real God."

2. Yes, it is an impossible standard. We can't attain it on our own. That's why we need Jesus. And we're not "inferior" at all. He created us sinless, but he also gave us free will. We're the ones who screwed it up, not him.

3. Not every human trait is sinful.

We're *all* sinners, btw...we all do things that are wrong.

The fault lies in the creator, not in the creation.

And anyhow, we are not his creation.

'Cause....

I'm a sinner, I'm a grinner
I'm a lover, and I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
