so me and my brother were walking our dogs in a large grassy area, and since no one was around, they were off the leash. they are aproximately 3 months and have had all there shots, so they were good. so this lady and her daughter and there shitzu, suddenly appear (our fault, i guess we werent paying attention as well as we thought) and one of our dogs ran exteremly fast to her, and stood in front of her (she doesnt jump thank gosh, but she is a hound dog, herding dog mix, so she is way faster than my 10 year old brother who was playing with her) so the lady, picks up her dog and screams get away, i suppose if she was scared???? thogh milly isnt scary looking. idk. but then the lady starts screaming and muttering about how they arent pure breds at us, (my brother had already retrieved his dog very quicly, she knows come) the daughter was on the other side with me, asking what my dog was, if it was friendly ect. but like looking at me weird when i told her it was.

A lot of people just get 'old.' They don't grow as a person, they simply age. Name calling is usually finished by the time you're 9. Her trying to make you feel less by saying that your dogs are not purebred is really neither here nor there, it doesn't matter what she thinks about your dogs, they aren't hers. What does matter is the example she is setting for her daughter. You must have good parents, they have taught you that there are some things you don't need to resolve, not at that moment anyway. You went home and wrote the 'question,' you didn't get angry and call her dog names. You more or less just 'mellowed' out. More than ill-mannered or rude she was really immature. If you were in a place where dogs are allowed off leash then you were doing nothing wrong. It probably won't mean much to you now, but there may come a time when your ability to 'mellow out' could save your life. Because that lady acted like an idiot is too bad, but it might have shown you something about your own charecter.

You have found a old Biddy who is a snob. there is nothing any better about a purebred and especially little inbred things like She has. If her dog was not on a leash she had no right to *****. I rescue dogs that have been abused. Purebred or not, they are dogs. I don't think the dogs really care what they are as long as they are healthy and cared for. More people should get dogs from shelters. They really respond well to getting a home after being in a shelter.

Don't let her get to you. She just an ignorant old snotty lady. If the whole place was an "off" leash area, then too bad for that lady. Plus, your dogs are puppies so they aren't likely to be aggressive. She can't make you leave either. Go back and enjoy playing with your dogs. If she doesn't want larger dogs playing with her Shih Tzu, well then she shouldn't be bringing her dog there.

Ok - I don't know what was up her butt about the mutt comment - that was uncalled for. And she can't really say much if her dog was also off-leash so I wouldn't worry about that either!

It's great that you adopted dogs and saved their lives. It's great that you were taking them out to play.

My ONLY caution to you, is, please make sure that they do not act this way under any situation where leashes are required. I now have an on-leash aggressive dog because people don't have leashes on their dogs when they are supposed to. Remember that not all dogs are friendly like yours are - and your dog running up to another dog - especially if that dog is on a leash can cause major problems.

It sounds like, from your explanation - that everything was kosher - and if her dog wasn't leashed either than she can't say diddly poo to you. I find that kindness kills more bees than ill-will. Next time you see her, if she talks to you - ask her about her dog. Maybe she would like to be one of those people that drones on and on about their precious pooch - maybe she does think that mutts should all be killed. Just say "hi - cute dog" and leave it at that. If she goes off on mutts again, then you have all our permission to let her have it. You can write us again and we'll all back you on that ;)

First let me congratulate you for rescuing these dogs!!!! now,if you live in an area that has leash laws you all were in the wrong, try to get those extendable, retractable leashes if you want to give them a little more room....as far as her comment about purebreds....her little dog was probably bought at a pet store and was not up to its breed standard but because it has "papers" it is supposed to be so much better than just a mutt, well dont let people like that bother you just go on loving your dogs and doing what is best for them!!!

First of all I commend you for getting a shelter dog. That is awesome!
As for that woman. . .she was probably a bit freaked out, but that is no reason to act that way! In fact, she reacted in a way that put her and her dog in harm. When dogs come to meet each other, they want to sniff each other and stuff. It's their way of shaking hands. If one dog acts aggressively, it is never a good idea to pick up the other dog! The aggressor could react by snapping at the dog in the person's arms and accidently nip the person! I understand protecting your pet, but obviously this wasn't a random dog that was running wild and eating small animals!
Don't give her any more thought! Off-leash dog parks are great and they give dogs much needed socialization. It's her dog that was hurt the most in this situation - by being put in a dangerous situation (by picking it up) and because she didn't allow her dog to socialize. If she is so snooty that her Shih Tzu can't socialize with 'mutts' then it will be a very lonely dog!

Accidental breedings occur and mixed breeds happen usually as the result of inexperienced owners. Good job for adopting from a shelter and helping the overpopulation of dogs. The woman that you ran into seems a little weird. I would not lose any sleep over her comments. She may have been startled by a dog running up to hers.

samething happened to me, well, anyway my neighborhood, supposedly called animal control on my dog, because it was big(french mastiff), and barks at the children&other dogs. The neighborhood-just the rednecks and indians called animal control and said we should not be able to have such a big dog in the neighborhood. She hardly barks. We have a 10foot fence. She's indoors most of the time and behaves. never attacked a dog or person. Shes so mellow. Your situation is similiar.
PEOPLE SHOULD NOT STEREOTYPE DOGS!
people also called animal control on my greeks neighbor golden retriever because he was attactive. he didn't attack anyone ever. He just plays outside. The children are the one that come up to him. what the hell.
they're the only two big dogs on the block left.
One day ill call animal control on those small yappers!!!

Some people are just snotty and think that the only good dogs in the world are purebred ones, when in fact mixes are just as good and useful.

I have a Shepherd mix who works cattle just fine, and I could bet he could beat the pants off of any Border Collie in a herding trial, given the chance.

ok, I would say that this lady is a "breedist" like racist, only with dog breeds. purebreds and mutts can both be nice, and friendly. This lady was probaly stuck up. If you apologized to this lady and said "I'm sorry" after your dog ran up to her, it's fine. Also, good for you, you adopted a dog from a shelter! That's great!

So, to sum it all up, that lady was "breedist" and don't worry about your dogs not being purebreds! Maybe we should take a lesson from dogs, and not care about other people's "breeds".
