to be considered a cult you have to have one leader that leads the group or congragation like a pastor or priest. JWs have a body of Elders that take the lead,so actuall y most christian denomination would fill that requirement as being a cult.

Jehovahs witness do believe they found the true religion jesus spoke of, that is why most of them were actaully converts from other religions,so yes they believe they are a privilaged people. Jesus only said their is one truth. But then again everyone has the same choice to accept it so why get upset.

My parents raised me in a Jehovah's Witness household since I was born. I went to meetings 3 times a week and went out in service occasionally until I was 13. Now that I am an adult, I don't attend the meetings anymore or associate with any Jehovah's Witnesses except for my sister who is baptized. I don't have any bad feelings towards Jehovah's Witnesses at all. I think they are kind and honest people. If I had to put my life in the hands of a stranger, I'd make sure it was a Jehovah's Witness.
I don't understand people's opinions of Jehovah's Witnesses when they are bad or angry. I don't know what would inspire that. I have always experienced good things with them. Not to mention that some of the nicest people I know (my grandma, sister) are Jehovah's Witnesses.
Jehovah's Witnesses are Christians and anyone who actually knew anything about the religion would know that.
Most of the opinions on this page are unfounded. Most people don't know much about Jehovah's Witnesses and that becomes very apparent in reading most of these comments. It isn't an insult, just encouragement to learn more about what you think you can comment on.
The reason Jehovah's Witnesses go out in service is to share knowledge with you. It's like this, if you knew something and you truly believed it, and you knew it would save lives, you'd want to tell as many people as you could to save their lives. Jehovah's Witnesses spend a lot of time studying the Bible and learning more and more, and they are trying to share their knowledge so that it can help others. That's why they go door to door.
They believe in God but in reading the Bible, have come to the conclusion that Jesus is not God, but God's son. Taken from the Bible, there is no other way to look at it. Jehovah's Witnesses haven't "written their own Bible" either. Some of these comments on here are very ignorant.
If you look at the Bible and all that it says, you will see that Jehovah's Witnesses are the rare religion that actually follows the Bible. When the Bible speaks against fornication and homosexuality, most other religions ignore it. Read the Bible and compare what God asks of us to what each religion asks of it's followers. You'd be surprised.

Totally, despite the fact that I disagree that it is an "admission" of some thing (because the WTS certainly not truthfully recounted that 1975 might usher in Armageddon.) To me it is extra an acknowledgement that there have been a few statements released that implied this to be so and unfortunately there used to be plenty of "expectation aroused concerning the 12 months 1975." Nothing extra. This used to be written via the WTS on the finish of 1974 - "The guides of Jehovah's witnesses have proven that, consistent with Bible chronology, it looks that 6,000 years of guy's lifestyles will likely be accomplished within the mid-1970's. But those guides HAVE NEVER SAID THAT THE WORLD'S END WOULD COME THEN. Nevertheless, there was abundant man or woman hypothesis at the subject. So the meeting presentation "Why We Have Not Been Told ‘That Day and Hour'" used to be very well timed. It emphasised that we have no idea the certain time while God will convey the tip." - The Watchtower 1974, 10/15 p. 635 I'm no genius however it sort of feels beautiful useful to me. Obviously folks that had fake expectancies (and who made up our minds to go away after 1975 considering that in their possess egocentric causes) could not learn.....? EDIT @ UL No however my dad and mom had been. They consider the whole lot. @Galatians Obviously you did not learn the Watchtower of 1974 which evidently states that WE DO NOT KNOW THE EXACT TIME WHEN GOD WILL BRING THE END. (caps mine)

Note that these answers are based on the concept that scripture is the authority for doctrine (fundamentalism).
1) Jehovah's Witnesses (JWs) regularly allow women to speak publicly during religious meetings, contrary to scripture. It doesn't matter that it is a "play", they are still speaking publicly. Likewise, the purpose of these plays is nothing other than to teach the congregation - another activity expressly forbidden to women (except when only women are present).
2) Rev 20:10
And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
JWs claim that this means death and destruction - not eternal torment. Scripture is *very* plain here - the dead feel nothing. Death is the absence of all feeling and awareness, including torment.
3) JWs are not permitted to question the doctrine handed down to them by the Watchtower Organization, even if those questions are scripturally based (as are all of these).
4) Rom 14:5-6
One man regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Let each man be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God.
I have never had a JW able to answer this - "He who observes a day, observes it for the Lord". Paul makes it quite clear here that observing non-biblical holidays are permitted, as long as they are observed "for the Lord" and not for some other reason. The "origins" of the holiday do not even come into question - only to whom the holiday is observed. Although it is not wrong to *choose* to avoid observing Christian holidays, it *is* wrong to *forbid* it.
5) 1Co 12:28-30
And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they?
JWs teach that *all* *must* be apostles, "ones sent" to preach and/or teach the gospel. These verses make it quite clear that *not all* Christians are apostles or teachers (or any of the other gifts - also in other verses). Again, there is nothing wrong with evangelism, but only some are evangelists (Eph 4:11).
That's all that I can think of at the moment. Realize that, except for the first 2 points, I do not believe that there is anything wrong with believing in these things for *yourself*. The Watchtower Society teaches that all of these things are necessary for *all* Christians, and that is contrary to scripture.
JWs are definitely Christians.
I find it odd that people have a problem with the NWT translation, but generally seem unable to locate mistranslations. I have been informed of only one questionable verse (can't remember which one, now - in Corinthians, I believe). I have been informed of *several* that are *definitely not* mistransaltions. JimPettis, to answer your concern about Rom 14:5-6, those scriptures are about conscience. Some believers were still following some of the Law Covenant as regards eating or not eating of certain food, and probably still observing certain days as righteous. Jesus had been a Jew, so these people felt they were still observing parts of the Law Covenant out of respect to Jesus. They evidently were still "babes" as to understanding the full meaning of Jesus Christ's sacrifice in that he was the "End of the Law Covenant."
Regarding woman speaking, there are rules concerning women teaching or praying in the presence or absence of a dedicated male. They wear a head covering to show respect for authority. Making comments, or partaking in a drama is not the same, if the scene requires the part be played by a woman who speaks, what are they to do, dress up the men as women? I think not. When comments are made in the congregation setting, it is not teaching, as the paragraphs are first read by a brother, and a brother asks the questions. In a bible study, a female student would not be required to cover her head when she was answering questions, the situation is similar.
It is good that you are thinking on the bible, but Armageddon will have come and gone while you are still perusing minor things.
Another note: My dictionary describes Christian as: n 1: a person who believes or professes belief in Jeus Christ and lives according to his teachings. Jesus didn't teach us to celebrate any holidays other than the memorial of the last supper, and he did not teach about a trinity. So are you people who say you are, really Christians?

For many yrs, I did not agree w/ Jw's. One day I finally decided to let them in and I listened a little to them and what they had to say.
Well, I thought, " theses poor, confused people. But they are so nice." I felt so sorry for them. I decided that I was going to do them a favor. See, I had written down some of the words that they had used (like Gehenna, and Sheol). I also saw that they used that New World Translation and they said it was the
most accurate interpretation of the Hebrew and Greek scriptures, I wanted to help those 'nice people'.
so i went to the library to do some research for them, take notes, and prove to these 'nice people' how deceived they had been. ( see, I had been brought up in another religion)
You could have blown me over w/ a feather -- i was absolutely shocked when I saw the I was the one that had been deceived . The words that they had said were accurate!!! I even did research on many bible translations - they were right again!!!! I had always been one to do my best to follow the correct way of doing things. So now i saw that if I really wanted a religion, THIS RELIGION WAS THE ACCURATE ONE. Never again did I go back to the baptist way of teaching. I had been mislead enough! Stuff that they had taught me ( like about christmas) wasn't even in the bible!
I was a really ticked! Here I had been believing this stuff all my life!
After seeing that I could learn the real truth about the bible's teachings by studying w/ these"nice people", that is what I decided to do. The false teachings that I had been brought up with were replaced w/ accurate teachings. I learned the way that 1st century Christians believed. Such an eye opening experience!!
I have been a baptized Jehovah's witness for the last 12 yrs. This has been the best decision I have ever made! No more am I kept "in the dark". And daily I try to become more like one of those "nice people"
and yesa : our doctrine IS from the bible , the Watchtower is supplimentary. please talk a little more in depth w/ your visitorsand they could explain this a little better. I see you share many beliefs w/ the friends.

Not 1 single thing!
The Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnessess;
are Christians.
We do not deny the diety of Christ;
it's the Trinity that we deny, as it is Not! a Biblical teaching.
And the NWT of the Holy Scriptures IS translated from the Hebrew, Greek & Aramaic texts, scrolls and Scriptures.
It is the most accurate translation.
This was even a Q on Jeopardy!,
A) The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures
Q) the most accurate translation of the Holy Bible.
edit: warpigs...
the comment U made about a man of color,
is the Mormons, NOT J'sW's.
Mormons here @ Y/A's have said so.
Pixie K;
we don't think 'we J'sW's' are the only 1's going to heaven.
In Rev. it says that 144,000 are bought from the earth to rule as Kings & Priests with Jesus over the Kingdom of God; the subjects of this Kingdom will be here on earth.
This is where most of us Witnessess have the hope of being.
Not in heaven.

Well, I`m an Atheist - but I have visited several Kingdom Halls in my younger days.
I must say I don`t find the Jehovahh Witness beliefs to be any more irrational than their fellow Christians. As for Mormons that's a different story. They believe a prophet John Whatever was sent by God in the 1800`s to spread the Word to the American Peninsula. Then they add another book to the bible and claim that the prophet John received in-scripted scrolls from heaven. My question is these are not Ancient scrolls "This was in the 1800`s, don`t you think we would have recovered these?"
Plus John whatever was a polygamist which is against the Bible.
Jehovah Witness on the other hand just have a different interpretation of the bible. The 144,000 elders that will be sent to heaven is in the bible. The reason why they refuse blood transfusions is because of a passage in the Bible that states you should not receive blood from you fellow man. Jehova Witness just interpret the Bible differently than Christians. They don`t celebrate holidays because they feel its a pagan tradition. I consider Jehovah Witness to be a Christian Denomination just like Methodist and Baptist.
Religion is in itself weird. But Jehovah Witness are not any more weird than Christians. Mormons on the other hand are weirder.

Okay, I follow the JW teachings(I'm not baptized) and the only thing that bugs me (and still does) is when I go to conventions and I'm looking for a seat all the rows of seats are taken. And it's not like the actual people are sitting there, but they put books to hold their seats. I think this is so rude, and it's not like I go late. They usually start at 9, and I arrive there at 8:20 or so and see alot of seats with books on them. It happened to me this year too, and in Jesus' Commemoration. I was trying to look for a seat and what you mean rows and rows of seats covered with books, and no people. All the ushers (brothers)could say were those seats were taken already. It's the only thing I find rude.

I have respect for the JW's for they done no wrong to me. What I disagree on is( if I stand correct hearing from what the former JW's says); JW's rule at least one of them. Why do you have to treat the "guilty sinner" with coldness? When a person falls on their face or hit rock bottom, why must you tear that person down even more when that is the time to start the healing process? For no one to talk to you as you enter the Congregation on Sunday is putting the sinner in such torment and pain that even if they are there physically, their inner spirit and faith is not present because they are shown to be outcast, not loved, not wanted. It's like you treat them as they have a plague and sending the wrong message to the broken spirited. You know, I think that is why they fall from the faith, because more shame is put upon them in the public light of the JW community. Even as the sinner's parents (mom & dad) have to be cold to them. That is not right to me. Jesus would NEVER abandon us as long as we repent. Remember he did not come for the righteous but for the sinner's. Jesus readily forgave even the adulteress woman while the rest wanted to STONE her. He said, "Go and sin no more, I also do not condemn you." Jesus told the group if you have NOT sinned then cast the stone. Jesus said NOT SIN, he didn't say how light or how heavy the sin is, just sin. In other words just because your sin is saying a profane word and the other fornication, both of you sinned according to Jesus. You know, plank in your eye and sawdust in the other. That is what I mean. I know a church has a right to "ex-communicate" and "disfellowship" for the church or congregation "restoration" but Jesus don't want that person to be cast away like throwing trash. Jesus wants the rest of the member's to still guide and support that sinner to get them OUT of the gutter, not washed down the sewer. Don't get angry at me, you ask and I am answering truthfully. I am not a JW but I have interest to learn in a way to be closer to God and Jesus. I am a person that can't be downright cruel to a broken person. Geez, even when the poorest person off the street walks up to me when I'm out in the yard for any recycle I don't tell them get away from me. I show that person respect because that person showed me respect by asking and not sneaking up at night to steal from me. I don't know, I am just going on and on here. Do you understand what I am saying?
EDIT:
1 Corinthians Ch.13 (intro to this special chapter in the NIV) And now I will show you the most excellent way.
(I will not quote the whole chapter because everyone got a Bible to look it up.)
8) love never fails. But where there are prophesies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
(You see, all these things won't get a person to pass through Jesus LOVING Kingdom. Because if you have all these NOW, you will not have it in Jesus Kingdom. THE only thing that will pass and enter Jesus Kingdom is LOVE. In this chapter isn't that what Jesus is saying. EVERYTHING ELSE He will do away with. Jesus even says the ONLY thing that REMAINS is: Faith, hope, and Love. BUT the GREATEST of these is LOVE.)
If I am wrong on what I am saying than anyone here tell me that I am wrong. Teach me what Jesus wants you to teach me.

I don't have anything against your religion unless you feel that it is superior to other religions or that you are the only ones that will go to Heaven. Then we got a problem. But I have found the Jehovah's Witnesses to be much kinder to me when I tell them I am not interested than the Christian Fundamentalists are.
