I've never had a problem with this using a gas stove, but now I've moved to an apartment, and it has an electric stove. Any advice about this is appreciated. Thanks.

You have to make sure your electric parts that you set your pan on is clean, nothing can be on them. and make sure the bottom of your pans are grease free and completely dry. I had that problem when I went from gas to electric, always clean them after every use.

Electric burners can't have ANYTHING on them. Even a speck of something will make smoke. Or maybe there is something on the bottom of the pan.
I know what you mean. I'm used to a gas stove too, so when I cook at someone else's house it takes me awhile to get used to and electric.

If the smoke is coming from under the pot, then you probably did not dry the pot.

If it's coming from inside the stove, stop using it and ask for a repairman.

The stove top is probably dirty or wet.
