So, you are a religious person because of Benefits?

Although I'm not an atheist, mebbe the real question is what are the benefits of not being xtian...: ;-Þ

1. You don't have to answer, "Are you born again?" from every kiddie xtian rugrat that you come incontact with.
2. You don't have to worry about how much you have to give in tithes, charity, and offerings.
3. You don't have to pretend to listen to the preachifying of TV Religion Inc. or take their advice, tithe them money and can blissfully ignore Kenneth Copeland, Oral Roberts, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, Rev. [whatshisname] Kennedy, Benny HInn, Jerry Fawwell (fih) tapes, Pass The Loot, CBN, The Billy Graham Crusade (the 2nd Generation) and their threats and extortions..
4. You don't have to pretend to speak in tongues, or try to guess what that gibberish; really means, except mebbe insanity. You no longer have to substitue emotion for logic and reason.
4. You don't have to burn books the clergy doesn't like, as
Calvary Chapel and others did. You can read and think what you like, without fear that you've commited a thought crime..
5. You can stop pretending that you believe that you're guilty of sins against a Nobodaddy God, Creationism, talking animals; Adam and Eve's shame at being naked and The Fall, original sins, virgin births, miracles, the Antichrist, Hell and, damnation, righteousness, the Deb'bil and the spiritual origins of Evil, The Eternal War of Good againist Evil.the dead coming to life, personal salvation through Jesus' Passopm {layexecution, and that God is Good.
6. You don't have to start every sentence with "The Bible sez..."
7. You don't have to fear that an invisible leprechuan will smite you dead for disobeying arcane, obsolete, useless, and unintelligent instructions, and laws which some say you're still subject to, but others say no longer matter, even though they came from the hand of God His'self., then fear that He'll desert you when you need Him the most - at the very hint of being sinful or unrighteous.
8. You can finally discover philosophy, reason, morality, justice, honesty and decency. and not assume that every science discussion and theory of origins has to start wiht Genesis.
9. You'll no longer be in the theologically awkward position of hating unbelievers in particular, and most of Mankind throughout history in general, and confusing hatred and slavish obedience for love..
10. You'll no longer have to worship the God that the rulers imposed from the top down to more readily oppress and subdue their subjects, and compel them to obey them. You can finally say good riddence to a god whose priests say approves of oppression and slavery of the common people by the Divine Right of Kings, while concomitantly saying that He's the God of the Poor and Downtrodden. You no longer have to support the for profit Oil and Greed wars of White Murderer Bush and the Bush Crime Family because they're all such Good Christian Fascists!...

I don't think there are any.
That's like asking "what are the benefits to the fact that we use hemoglobin for oxygen transport"?
There may or may not be some, but it doesn't really matter because it's a fact of life.
The same is true about the non-existence of god. I don't get anything out of the fact that he doesn't exist, he just doesn't exist.

The benefit of thinking for yourself. Once you do that, you don't have to be afraid that you will end up in some awful place when you die because you didn't follow some book.

So are you doing a cost-benefit analysis to determine if you should be an atheist or not? I suggest you read Pascal's wager first.

Why does it have to have a benefit? It's just a way of thinking.

Belief in things the way they really are, no matter how hard or sad things may be at times. I prefer reality... I'd take the red pill every time.

Okay I'm actually agnostic, but I feel qualified to answer this one.

Not worrying about pleasing someone who may not exist.

Living the life we have to the fullest because we feel it's the only one we've got.

Keeping that 10% of my earnings and using it for a wide screen, flat panel, 65" LCD HDTV.

Freedom! Freedom to think clearly, freedom to not be a slave to imaginary gods and superstitions, freedom to not be tied to an evil dogma that forces one to do evil in religion's name.

"Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." - Steven Weinberg
