i lived in la and got married there in 2003 it's not hard just a pain in the butt to do. first go to the local dmv and get a new license i think you may need to pay for a replacement then go to social security office hopefully you don't live in baton rouge or you'll be there all day. of course you can not do any of this without the marriage license after you send it off and it gets signed and all and offical so normally i sent mine off the day after the wedding and in a wk when we returned it was offical and i went to get everything changed. most everything will not cost you the big thing is your ss card and your license.

My friend said that it wasnt difficult. The only thing she had to do was to carry her marriage certificate with her everywhere for about a week or two! for some things it may cost. I know here in UT there is a fee for getting a new drivers license, and I think that some credit card companies charge fees for changing names...and for your social security card you need to go the social security office and show proof there where they will re-issue you a card....

Not at all .. just take the marriage certificate or license to the dmv and they will change your license , in Fla I know it cost to change it and only because you will be getting a whole new license. Social security you can go online and print the form and mail in a copy of the license and that doesn't cost at all.

Piece of cake! Seriously. I heard nightmares, and I walked into Social Security, had to take a number - before I could sit down they called it. The lady there asked some questions while she filled out the paperwork and couple weeks later there it was in the mail.

After you go to SS you can change your license, cards, whatever else you chose.

I'm not certain, but if you're worried about taking your maiden name back after a divorce, why are your getting married or why did you get married? If you work at having a good marriage, then you don't have to worry about going through the hassle of taking back your maiden name after a divorce, because there won't be one. And taking your husband's last name, or hyphenating your maiden and his name, is entirely your choice. Personally, I took my husband's name, it makes it much easier with children, because my children have the same last name I do.

It wasn't hard for me but I live in Virginia. All I had to do was mail a copy of my marriage certificate to the social security administration. I took a copy to the DMV and had to pay $10 for my name to be changed on my driver's license.

If there is a fee... it would only be for geting certified copies of your marriage certificate and license that you have to send to the social security department. I think you can just call the credit card companies and mail a regular photocopy of the paperwork to them.

It's not hard to do. You just have to take proof of your marriage to the social security office. I think there might be a small fee, but I don't remember for sure.

Congrats on the wedding.

The only fee is postage to mail a form to the government, and the cost (like 6.00 a copy) of the marriage license.

Big hint- get 3 copies... one to mail to the government, one for your records and like the extra one you can make copies of. I had to take it to various places: The bank, the bureau of motor vehicles, and for work...so I was happy to have the 3rd copy that I didn't mind if it got crumpled in all it's travels. :)

Well, I am having my last name changed, along with getting a nickname, because I am being adopted. But with all the fees it is almost around $1,000 already, and it may take some time.
